1916réf. 003715New York: The University of the State of New York State Museum 1916. Reading copy with much wear and tear. Full page color plates by L.A. Fuertes. Marginalia lovers dream. It appears that the owner of this book used it to document in almost diary form throughout book what appears to be more than 20 years of bird watching from 1931 to 1953 with dated notes throughout: on blank pages reverso of plates etc even laid in sheets. Book has numerous flaws with serious wear and tear to cloth covers. Cloth is peeling from front boards and there is a split the length of front spine. Shaken. Multiple sheets laid in front of book were cello taped and are now loose and the cello tape has left a dark stain. There is evidence on about six pages in front of insect or rodent nibbling on bottom corner these are actually laid in lone pages not pages from the actual book. The color plates are bright but some have fingermarks or light foxed spots at least one page has ink transfer from the previous page. There are some plates with notes or marginalia on reverse. Cloth. Reading Copy/No Jacket. Illus. by Fuertes L.A. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The University of the State of New York State Museum Hardcover

1837réf. 033014London: Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author 1837 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original cloth binding with 2 folding maps at the rear. Robert Dunn titles himself as an 'animal-preserver' - which sadly does not mean that he was a conservationist. The book is a full account of his travels and the various species that he encountered and then shot and presumably stuffed when he was back home. The binding is complete and sound with pulling to spine ends bumped corners and some staining to the front board. There are the remains of a paper title label to the spine. Internally the original endpapers are present with 2 old signatures at the fep which has some light marking at the bottom. Contents with half title; frontispiece; title page; dedication; introduction; notice to subscribers announcing the addition of maps for those who wanted them; text 128pp; and folding maps of Orkney and Shetland. Contents are generally clean with light toning particularly to page edges and with the odd spot or mark. Pages 45-48 are badly opened with some loss to the side margin. The maps have some creasing at the side edges. Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author hardcover
1794réf. 033347London : Printed for the Author and for F and C Rivington 1794 A complete set of Donovan's British Birds with 244 hand coloured plates. In contemporary half morocco leather bindings with marbled paper sides with the 10 volumes bound in 5. A mixed edition - with Vol III having a 'New Edition' title page dated 1815 and Vol V with a title dated 1820. The other 8 volumes have first issue titles. The bindings have highly decorative spines with 6 gilt compartments 4 with a gilt bird in the middle one with titles and one with volume numbers. The leather has occasional scuffing and surface loss particularly on the corners. There is rubbing to the spine joints and the first 2 volumes have closed splits at the joints extending 2 compartments down from the top. The marbled paper is quite scuffed on the surface and edges. Internally the endpapers have the same marbling. All the volumes have initial blanks; some have final blanks. Unusually the plates have thick slightly waxy paper guards instead of the normal tissue paper. These do not enhance the appearance of the volumes but they have protected the plates well and the colours are vibrant. The contents are not sewn in and a couple of plates and some guards are loose. Overall the text paper tends to be toned and with occasional spotting and browning around the edges - particularly the top edge. The plate paper is slightly toned but fox spots are rare. There is some offsetting to the guard paper. Contents tightly bound. Contents: Vol I/II - I - title 1794 with ink gift inscription at the top; text paginated for a few pages only; plates 1-29 with text. Published also by T Kinnersley 1815 A good 2 volume set in new half calf and marbled board bindings with 148 of 152 hand-coloured plates. The collation of this work is generally haphazard and the plates are not numbered. The bindings are in fine condition with leather title labels and gilt lines to spines. Contents: Vol I: title; introduction i - xxxv; text pp 1-586 with 67 of 71 plates. Vol II: title dated 1820; text pp 1-700 with 81 plates Finis.
