Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles the books carry faithfully every spot mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps and librarian's annotations. From behind glass the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles they are exactly the same size as the originals Imperial Folio: 22" x 15". Each volume is hand sewn cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum Natural History on the front and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." This book is held in stock. 1784réf. ABC_46946The Netherlands 1784. Large folio 52 x 33.5 cm. Contemporary richly gold-tooled red morocco over boards sewn on 8 supports each board with a round gold-tooled green morocco inlaid centre piece gold-tooled board edges 2 pairs of green cloth ties gilt edges and block-printed paste-paper endpapers in red and yellow. The spine is also richly gold-tooled with 2 different rolls to frame the compartments and underline the leaf and flower stamps. The front and back boards match except for the gold lettering: on the front board "konst tekeningen" and on the back board "anno 1784". The tooling shows 4 different rolls used for multiple frames and numerous stamps of leaves flowers vases birds and other decorative elements. With 18 large beautifully hand-drawn and coloured illustrations of birds. 90 ll. Splendidly bound drawing book containing 18 unsigned detailed watercolour and gouache drawings of birds. The colourful birds appear to be drawn after the plates in Edward Donovan's The natural history of British birds first published in instalments between 1794 and 1819. If so the present drawings must have been added to the drawing book at least 10 years after it was bound. The blank drawing-book was bound according to the gold lettering on the back board in 1784 and the tools identify it as the work of the most important and arguably the best bindery in the 18th-century Netherlands dubbed the First Stadholder Bindery by Storm van Leeuwen. Since the names of the binders remain unknown the name now used alludes to the fact that it produced many bindings by order of the Stadholder Willem V and presumably his father Willem IV. Its great importance rests on the number of its surviving bindings the diversity of the work it produced the quality of the tooling the exceptionally large number of binding tools it must have owned and the length of time it must have been operating from at least 1722 to 1793 Storm van Leeuwen. The paper is laid with no watermark and appears to be quite consistent.Occasional minor foxing but otherwise internally fine and clean. The binding shows only slight signs of wear so both the album and the binding are in very good condition. A sumptuously bound album of attractive illustrations of British birds.l For the binding: Jan Storm van Leeuwen Bookbinding 18th century IIA pp. 67-101; for images of the rolls etc.: Jan Storm van Leeuwen De achttiende-eeuwse Haagse boekband pp. 388-395. 1772réf. 143651772. Jonston John and Nicolas Robert. Collection d'oiseaux les plus rares 1772 preserves Nicolas Robert's seventeenth-century ornithological imagery in an eighteenth-century publication devoted to birds from the royal menagerie and Jonston's natural history of birds. Published in Paris by L. C. Desnos the work joined Robert's images of birds associated with the French royal collections to a French treatment of Jonston's earlier natural history placing seventeenth-century court-sponsored observation within the expanding eighteenth-century literature of ornithology. Jonston John and Robert Nicolas. Collection d'oiseaux les plus rares. Paris: L. C. Desnos 1772. Etching depicting six birds of prey each perched on a branch; one bird wears bells attached to its legs a detail associated with trained birds used in falconry. Etching measures 11" by 7"; overall sheet measures 12.5" by 17.75". The plate belongs to Desnos's Collection d'oiseaux les plus rares gravés et dessinés d'après nature which incorporated images by Nicolas Robert with material derived from Jonston's natural history of birds. Robert worked for Gaston d'Orléans before his natural-history paintings passed with Gaston's collections to Louis XIV. Under royal patronage Robert continued depicting plants and animals including birds kept at the royal menagerie; his surviving vellums became an early nucleus of the natural-history illustration collections now preserved by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris France. This 1772 printing records the continued circulation of Robert's seventeenth-century bird imagery more than a century after its creation while the bells visible on one raptor preserve a specific visual reference to contemporary falconry practice.
