The growth of the granite industry in New England was spurred by the development of the railroads allowing for "efficient and economical means of access to potential out-lying markets." see: Barre Downtown Historic District study The influx of highly-skilled and educated artisans from many parts of the world who came to work in the granite industry produced an unusually high degree of political and social ferment for northern New England and the establishment of unions to protect workers. These pamphlets offer one articulation of a union's right to police its own piecework rates and procedures. In addition to prices these pamphlets also include provisos concerning working conditions and circumstances including a nine-hour workday Sunday work dates of payment and arbitration in the event of disputes. Because of the skilled and educated nature of its workforce the Granite Cutters Union and its branch in Barre formed in 1886 was an influential part of the labor movement. An interesting item of labor history. unknown
