1812ref. 2111025Baltimore: Robert H. Craig 1812. First Thus. Hardcover. Fair. First printing thus of a work that was originally published in England in the late 1700s. I do know if that earlier work was revised for American application. Calf. 215pp. Illustrated: Twenty-six 26 plates better to call them drawings as the paper is the same as the text are present there are two #23s but different drawings and no #22 leading us to believe there was simply an error in numbering five 5 of which are folding. Other copies many years ago either called for 25 26 or 27 drawings although only 25 or 26 were present. The non-folding drawings are in vg condition. The five 5 folding drawings have various repairs and some paper loss. One of them is trimmed at the bottom with some image loss. Another is missing the leading edge and possibly the first word of the caption but the image is almost complete. Early non-authorial gift presentation in ink on ffep "Presented to Mr. Malsay by his friend Edward B____." One page Introduction by the publisher "Teacher of Military Tactics Baltimore June 1812" in which Craig concludes "Having examined the different works on the title I take the liberty of recommending this work to the Cavalry of the United States as possessing advantages over any other work now in use." Condition: Fair. Front hinge broken; back hinge just starting. Joints sound. Leaves with various small nicks and occasional margin punctures. One page torn across but repaired with archival material as are some of the folding illustrations. Intro page with repaired tear. Back two leaves one is the blank rear free end paper with margin chip. Seven leaves 14pp are bound out of place and were so noted in ink by an early reader. Rare. To our knowledge the last time a copy of this edition was offered for sale was in 1995 at auction and only a handful of copies have been offered for sale in the last 112 years. Robert H. Craig hardcover

1947ref. 2507025Rexburg: Upper Valley Wranglers 1947. First Edition. Soft cover. Good. q. 1st and apparently only printing. Stapled powder blue wrappers. 100 glossy pp. Illustrated abundantly with b/w photos and portraits. In 1947 residents of Rexburg and the surrounding country of Madison Fremont and Teton counties in SE Idaho "held a meeting and decided to form a riding club for the upper valley." This book presents in photographs the roster of members. Uniformly composed with members photographed on their horses which are named portraits were taken of the forty-five 45 members including two 2 flagbearers. All of the members were men but the two flagbearers were women. There is a separate portrait of the Announcer Eldred Stephensen. There are two group shots of the horsemen in formation several area scenery photos a bird's eye photos of the city and three Rexburg Hereford Ranch photos featuring a Morgan mare a Morgan yearling and a Hereford bull Noble Lamplighter from Straight Anxiety Strain with their owners. Each wrangler portrait occupies the recto of a page and on the facing verso are the advertisers some illustrated. Some advertisers are the wranglers themselves on the facing page. We found particularly noteworthy and poignant the one-half page ad "Success to the wranglers" sponsored by the Japanese-American Citizen League. It shows the organization's parade float which appears to present the famous hill on Iwo Jima with an American flag planted on top. On the side of the float is written "FOR BETTER AMERICANS IN A GREATER AMERICA." Japanese-American's were interned / relocated in at least two camps in Idaho during the last half of WWII. The wranglers are still competing today. Rexburg at the time was the home of ". Ricks College maintained by the Mormon Church." The city was also home to a "Mormon Tabernacle and grounds ." BYU / Idaho is currently located in Rexburg. Noted as to condition is that the glossy covers are slightly chipped and have cracks in the sizing. The visual information cover illustrations and text is partially worn off. Text block very good. We have located no other copies of this book thus truly an Idaho rarity. We locate no other copies anywhere although surely some family descendants must have a copy. Not in Adams Herd. Upper Valley Wranglers unknown
1857ref. 2507047Washington DC: Benjamin C. Howard 1857. First Thus. Soft cover. Poor. 1857 Washington printing said to be issued at or about the same time as the New York edition. Original string-tied printed wraps. LACKING ORIGINAL PAPER COVERS TITLE PAGE AND LAST LEAF page 239 the last two of which have been replaced by your bookseller as new pages. In this famous and convoluted case Scott a slave who had also lived in free Wisconsin Territory and Illinois sued for his freedom as did his wife. A lower court in Missouri ruled in his favor. This ruling was reversed by the Missouri Supreme Court whereupon Scott appealed to the US Supreme Court where he lost in a 7-2 decision when the winds of slavery politics blew to smithereens the up-to-then accepted "doctrine" that "once free" as in having lived in a free state or territory "always free." This decision has come down through US history as one of the biggest failures of the US Supreme Court. As noted above the title page is missing. I have supplied. cutting to proper dimension a modern page of the same which is laid in. This copy is also missing the last page p.339 but I have supplied the entire text of the last page and also cut it to proper dimension and laid it in. Otherwise the copy string-tied as noted has water tidelines upper half of the first leaf which tideline extends to a decreasing degree into the 63pps. Clarity of readability is not compromised. Quite minor foxing to a few margins. Minor edge chipping to first and last pages. To be obviously handled with care but a quite serviceable reading copy if you desire this text in its original form pps 3 - 228. Very scarce. This document in book form is #68 in the famed Grolier Club's One Hundred Influential American Books Printed before 1900 published in 1947. Benjamin C. Howard unknown
