1962réf. ABE-1684137509155Penguin London 1962 A very rare Penguin Poets issue with an introduction and plain prose translations of selected letters and poetry by Oliver Bernard. This copy is still firmly bound and looks almost unread. A paperback this old has inevitable signs of age; cheap wood pulp paper for instance. This means em-browning to the text block. Apart from this there is blind stamp of a former owner on the half title. But this merits a grading of Near Fine because it is without a twisted spine or with loose pages. This is a sturdy and collectable RARE Penguin. It was numbered D64 in the Penguin Poets series. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine. Penguin London paperback
1960réf. ABE-10803067050Penguin London 1960 A superb collectable in a firm and tight first edition Penguin Special. Flaws Initials of former owner on the title page and the text paper is inevitably tanning. It is after all a mass market paperback. But having said that this is unusually well kept for a paperback of 63 years old. It is sharp and square and good for a few more years. réf. 18634On letterhead of 'El Fenix . Carvajal . Malaga . Spain'. 31 March 1969. 2pp. 12mo. In good condition lightly aged and worn. The letterhead printed in red and black features the illustration of a phoenix in fire which featured on the covers of some Penguin Books publications of works by D. H. Lawrence. He begins by stating that Malcolm Kelly has sent him Bailey's letter 'with its very flattering reference to me'. He explains that he has 'always regarded the book business as a whole & not as two camps as it were book-sellers & publishers'. It is for this reason that he 'took the line I did recently against selling our books through super-markets pubs & petrol stations'. He explains 'the original concept of Penguins': 'that there was a far larger market for good books well produced at a low sic price than the book trade had ever imagined'. He has been satisfied that his theory has been vindicated. He believes that his firm is 'a good example of the team spirit' and that it has been 'fortunate over the years in having attracted as able a group of people through editorial & production to sales without which the results could not have been achieved'. On letterhead of 'El Fenix . Carvajal . Malaga . Spain'. 31 March 1969. unknown
