1829réf. 500052762William 1829. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. red spine marbled boards Charles Lamb "The Wife's Trial; or The Intruding Widow" - pages 765-781 This is an original dramatic poem by Lamb the famous essayist who wrote as Elia. Based on George Crabbe's tale The Confidant it was first published in the December 1828 issue of Blackwood's and later included in Lamb's Album Verses in 1830. Curiously it is omitted from the automated Google Books contents list although it is present in the bound volume. Lamb received £20 from Blackwood for it. This is the volume's most important famous-author contribution. Contemporary bibliographical record James Hogg's important Gothic story "The Brownie of the Black Haggs by the Ettrick Shepherd" - pages 489-496 This is the first publication of one of James Hogg's best-known supernatural stories. It concerns the violent Lady Wheelhope and the strange servant Merodach who may be a brownie demon or instrument of punishment. It is a decidedly dark tale involving hatred attempted murder possession and supernatural vengeance. It was subsequently collected in Hogg's The Shepherd's Calendar. Modern scholars regard it as an important example of Scottish Gothic fiction.
