1991ref. 52982New York: New Republic 1991. First printing. Fine in about fine jacket. Inscribed first edition of this personal account of the events leading up to and following the discovery of the AIDS virus by its co-discoverer. A multifaceted book - part memoir part science-writing - by the cofounder and director of the Institute of Human Virology and the most cited scientist in the world between 1980 and 1990. Gallo was the head of the Labratory of Tumor Cell Biology at NIH's National Cancer Institute when he published the set of journal papers that identified the retrovirus that would eventually be known as HIV. His papers correctly identified the virus as the cause of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome AIDS. He and his team also pioneered the development of the HIV blood test that would allow healthcare professionals to conduct screenings for the virus. Some controversy followed the publication of the Gallo papers when DNA tests showed that the same strain of retrovirus was discovered by French virologists a year prior to the discovery by Gallo and his team. A lawsuit over the patent over the development of the HIV-antibody test would follow ending in an agreement to "divide the scientific credit and patent royalties from all HIV work and the blood test that detected it" Markel. VIRUS HUNTING contains Gallo's side of the story in what was his first time speaking out about the controversy. A clean copy warmly inscribed. 9.25'' x 6''. The three-movement sonatas of op. 1 which Handel judged favourably exhibit sectional contrasts characteristic of the ripieno concerto. In the op. 2 sonatas also in three movements Fritz approached the style of the Turin school with a richly decorated solo line supported by a thematically unrelated bass; some of the final movements are sets of chaconne variations." "Sammartini was primarily an instrumental composer and one of the leading writers of concertos and sonatas in England between 1730 and 1750. His printed collections include 24 sonatas for flute and bass 30 trios for flutes or violins 24 concerti grossi four keyboard concertos an oboe concerto 16 overtures and some flute duets and cello sonatas. The tuneful Recorder Concerto in F found in only one source S-Skma has become his best-known work. Hawkins classed Sammartini's instrumental music with that of Corelli and Geminiani. Though his music is rooted in the late Baroque style it also reflects some later trends. There is considerable variety in the number succession and type of movements. . His music played a fundamental role in the formation of the Classical style. He was one of the most advanced and experimental composers of the early Classical period and the first great master of the symphony preserving his individuality despite the rise of the Viennese and Mannheim schools. Though the extent of Sammartini's influence is still not fully measured the high quality of his music places him among the leading creative spirits of the 18th century." They discovered and removed to Germany many artifacts while carelessly destroying others. Le Coq thought he had found evidence of Aryan culture in what they found in China. Some of the material taken back to Germany was destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. Online sources state that China regards Le Coq's actions pn these expeditions as comparable to the looting of the Elgin marbles by the British. This book's original owner Kenneth Scott Latourette 1884-1968 was a scholar and historian who taught for many years at the Yale Divinity School. He is probably most remembered for his much admired volumes surveying world Christianity. Allen & Unwin hardcover books

Fine. On Typographica Broodthaers excerpta: "This book started out as an installation but devolved into conceptual art and lay dormant until now. But my first idea was to set it in a kind of poison pen letter fashion and as I had a complete run of Eurostile Extended-which I felt quite suited to it-I went ahead and printed it on a half sheet of Strathmore. It was not long before I decided that the copy was irrelevant-that the idea was simply an idea-or more to the point-joke-that the piece did not need to be produced and that a written description would suffice: The idea of the thing being better than the thing itself. I still have the press and the type still standing after 25 years and for the book I reprinted the form photographed the original drawing and sheet of Strathmore; along with the press and the type piled up and into it." On Word Bags: "Graffiti on a bank building. A suite of seven cibachromes showing individually the letters of the word PROTEST. Building maintenance went over the letters with lacquer thinner and then covered the entire word in clear plastic to protect passers-by. The red spray paint spread and ran down the side of the building imparting a blood & tear-like aspect to the letterforms under the billowing shroud of plastic. Hence body bag viz. word bags." On Palabra Found poems in lowercase Peignot - by way of its modified ascenders and dotted i - if handled as a unicameral may be seen as a democratization of type; or as a kind of gentrified graffiti.
