1876ref. 952London: J. & A. Churchill New Burlington Street 1876. On Certain Endemic Skin and Other Diseases of India and Hot Climates Generally is a first edition 1876 official medical report commissioned by the British government published under the sanction of the Secretary of State for India in Council. Authored jointly by Tilbury Fox one of the foremost British dermatologists of the period and physician to the skin disease department at University College and T. Farquhar a retired Surgeon-Major of the Bengal Medical Service the work grew out of a formal 1872 initiative by the Duke of Argyll and the Army Sanitary Commission to gather better medical knowledge of endemic skin diseases affecting British and native populations across India and other hot-climate colonial territories. As detailed in the book's own prefatory letter addressed to the Marquis of Salisbury then Secretary of State for India a "Scheme" or questionnaire on endemic skin diseases was circulated to medical officers stationed in India and other colonial and foreign stations and this volume presents the compiled findings along with dedicated notes on specific regional conditions including pellagra clou de Biskra a form of cutaneous leishmaniasis caneotica and Aleppo evil Aleppo boil another leishmaniasis-related condition - diseases of particular concern to colonial medical administration in the 19th century. The volume includes five plates contributed by H. Vandyke Carter a physician of the Indian Medical Service well known in the history of medicine both for his earlier anatomical illustration work and for his pioneering research into fungal and endemic skin disease in India lending this book additional significance as a collaboration between leading dermatological and colonial-medical authorities of the era. As an official Colonial-era government medical report rather than a commercial textbook this title is scarce in the market and holds particular interest for collectors of British colonial medical history tropical medicine and the history of dermatology as well as institutions building collections on 19th-century British India and public health administration. Condition & Binding: The book survives in its original plain paper-covered boards a drab/buff paper printed with the title author and publisher information directly on the front board along with the Colonial Office Library stamps typical of how official government reports of this kind were originally issued - as a working reference document rather than a decoratively bound trade publication. At some point the spine was reinforced or rebacked with a deep maroon cloth gilt-lettered "Skin Diseases of India" to stabilize the volume for continued library use; this cloth spine shows wear at the head and tail. However the front board is now fully detached from the text block separated at the original hinge and should be considered as accompanying the book rather than attached to it - buyers should be informed this will need rebacking or careful custom housing e.g. a slipcase or clamshell box to keep the volume as a complete unit. The title page is likewise detached from the text block though present and fully legible showing the ink accession number "5623" and Colonial Office Library associations intact on the loose leaf. The original front wrapper is heavily worn and toned with soiling and chipping at the corners and edges with a partially legible embossed Colonial Office Library stamp visible through the paper; the rear wrapper is a plain cream paper bearing a clean fully legible Colonial Office Library ink stamp. Internally aside from the detached title leaf the remaining text block is complete with the dedicatory letter to the Marquis of Salisbury and the body text present and legible showing light to moderate age-toning consistent with a working reference copy that saw real institutional use. Overall- poor to fair. J. & A. Churchill, New Burlington Street unknown
