rif. acs1142The Kensal Press 1983. Octavo red cloth hardcover gilt lettering 187 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Some saints are pious some picturesque some powerful. But none has cast a more profound or enduring spell over men’s imagination than St. George. His story combines mystery -- the mystery of his provenance -- and adventure -- the adventure of his legend. It touches the history of the innumerable peoples and professions who have adopted St. George as their patron all over the world -- people as diverse as the English and the Russians professions as various as peasants and knights. The folklore literature and art of most of the world’s major cultures are steeped in and sometimes saturated by the image and allure of the saint. With equal surety Sir David Scott Fox traverses all these fields deftly elegantly objectively. He takes us on a detective quest for the ‘real’ St. George showing that the saint doesn’t just belong to the world of fairytale. The legend is traced in all its elusive variety the iconography explained in all its glittering diversity. St. George’s roles in so many national and social myths are unfolded with enthralling expertise. More than a study of the shadowy saint Sir David Scott Fox’s book is the biography of a substantial legend. hardcover books
