From the cars we drive to the instant messages we receive from debate about genetically modified foods to astonishing strides in cloning robotics and nanotechnology it would be hard to deny technology's powerful grip on our lives. To stop and ask whether this digitized implanted reality is quite what we had in mind when we opted for progress or to ask if we might not be creating more problems than we solve is likely to peg us as hopelessly backward or suspiciously eccentric. Yet not only questioning but challenging technology turns out to have a long and noble history. In this timely and incisive work Nicols Fox examines contemporary resistance to technology and places it in a surprising historical context. She brilliantly illuminates the rich but oftentimes unrecognized literary and philosophical tradition that has existed for nearly two centuries since the first Luddites—the ""machine breaking"" followers of the mythical Ned Ludd—lifted their sledgehammers in protest against the Industrial Revolution. Tracing that current of thought through some of the great minds of the 19th and 20th centuries—William Blake Mary Shelley Charles Dickens John Ruskin William Morris Henry David Thoreau Ralph Waldo Emerson Robert Graves Aldo Leopold Rachel Carson and many others—Fox demonstrates that modern protests against consumptive lifestyles and misgivings about the relentless march of mechanization are part of a fascinating hidden history. She shows as well that the Luddite tradition can yield important insights into how we might reshape both technology and modern life so that human community and environmental values take precedence over the demands of the machine. In Against the Machine Nicols Fox writes with compelling immediacy—bringing a new dimension and depth to the debate over what technology means both now and for our future. Shearwater Books hardcover

1979rif. 91595Washington DC: Office of Air Force History U.S. Air Force 1979. Presumed First Edition First Printing. Trade paperback. Good. x 278 pages. Illustrations. Figures. Footnotes. Maps. Tabular Data. Appendices includes Chronology and Tactical Situation Reports. Notes. Glossary. Bibliographic Note. Index. The text is largely in a two-column format. The cover has some wear and soiling. Lt. Col. Roger Patterson Fox 1924-2000 was a highly decorated United States Air Force officer base security specialist and military historian who served over 25 years on active duty. He is most recognized for his authoritative research on Vietnam War perimeter tactics and his documented heroism under fire. The book analyzes the complex tactical and logistical challenges of protecting fixed air installations from guerrilla and conventional threats during the Vietnam War. The text evaluates the primary security efforts undertaken by the United States Air Force USAF and allied units to protect 10 key air bases within South Vietnam. The Timeline & Attack Data: The analysis spans from the early advisory years in 1961 to the U.S. military withdrawal following the January 1973 cease-fire. The chronological narrative starts with the first major base strike at Bien Hoa Air Base on November 1 1964. Over the course of the war these 10 installations sustained a combined total of 475 enemy attacks. Systemic Vulnerabilities: Fox details critical initial deficiencies in staff support. He highlights early systemic failures in local intelligence gathering motor vehicle availability weapons procurement communications infrastructure and civil engineering defenses. Evolution of Tactics: The core of the synopsis outlines how the USAF learned from these early defeats. By the end of the conflict security forces had pioneered massive improvements in perimeter defense stand-off counter-mortar tactics and joint coordination with South Vietnamese forces. Environmental Obstacles: The book uniquely explores how local geography hindered defense. For example the rapid growth of local tranh grass yen-bach weeds and tall bamboo frequently compromised visibility and provided cover for Viet Cong sappers. Lt. Col. Roger P. Fox brought immense personal experience to this research. As a base security officer during the conflict he personally rallied USAF and South Vietnamese security forces to successfully repel a major enemy penetration at Tan Son Nhut Air Base on December 4 1966-an action for which he was awarded the Silver Star.
