Wright's work represents a significant early nineteenth-century English adaptation of Buffon's celebrated natural history. Rather than simply reprinting the original text Wright sought to modernise and expand Buffon's work for a contemporary British readership incorporating material from leading naturalists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries particularly Georges Cuvier and Bernard Germain de Lacpde. The volume also includes an anonymous introductory treatise on botany reflecting the growing importance of botanical science within natural history.Richly illustrated throughout the work contains more than 400 charming wood-engraved illustrations most of them executed by the noted artist William Harvey together with four vignette engravings by J. Thompson after Harvey's designs. These extensive illustrations greatly enhanced the accessibility and appeal of the text providing visual representations of the animals for a broad reading public. As a publication Wright's edition is both attractive and historically significant. It demonstrates the enduring influence of Buffon's eighteenth-century natural history while revealing how his ideas were being reassessed and supplemented in light of advances in zoology and comparative anatomy. The botanical section offers a concise overview of contemporary plant science discussing the structure and functions of roots stems leaves flowers fruits and seeds as well as plant nutrition germination and classification. Particularly noteworthy is its treatment of both the Linnaean system and the emerging Natural System of classification illustrating the transition in botanical thought during the early nineteenth century. As such the work stands as an important document of the period's efforts to reconcile classical natural history with the rapidly developing scientific knowledge of the modern age. Accompanied by two additional plates heightened in color numbered XX and XXII from a volume 7 of the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux. The illustrator Jacques de Sève's main work was unquestionably the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière for which he executed nearly 2000 drawings. Unlike the illustrations he produced for other sections of Buffon's monumental work made primarily from stuffed specimens his work on birds was essentially executed from living models. To accomplish this vast project Jacques de Sève drew inspiration from the works of the king's ""Peintre ordinaire"" Jean-Baptiste Oudry. This judicious decision won him the favor of the queen a great admirer of the master of animal painting. By incorporating small Boucher-style putti in the introductory vignettes of certain volumes of the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux Sève also gained the good graces of the king's mistress. These illustrations at once decorative and scholarly which appear in the present first edition were not retained in the duodecimo edition. A superb complete copy of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon's Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by the French Pliny. As Ferdinand Hoefer wrote this work maintains the same ""magnificence of style"" as the other publications in the Histoire naturelle générale et particulière. Imprimerie royale hardcover

1774rif. FB640 /6AFull leather binding black title plate. Gilt floral design on the spine. The Histoire Naturelle générale et particulière avec la description du Cabinet du Roi English: Natural History General and Particular with a Description of the King's Cabinet is an encyclopaedic collection of 36 large quarto volumes written between 1749–1804 initially by the Comte de Buffon and continued in eight more volumes after his death by his colleagues led by Bernard Germain de Lacépède. The books cover what was known of the "natural sciences" at the time including what would now be called material science physics chemistry and technology as well as the natural history of animals. Georges-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon 7 September 1707 – 16 April 1788 was a French naturalist mathematician cosmologist and encyclopédiste. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists including two prominent French scientists Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. Ernst Mayr wrote that "Truly Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century". Credited with being one of the first naturalists to recognize ecological succession he was later forced by the theology committee at the University of Paris to recant his theories about geological history and animal evolution because they contradicted the Biblical narrative of Creation. Buffon held the position of intendant director at the Jardin du Roi now called the Jardin des Plantes. Buffon's Histoire naturelle générale et particulière 1749–1788: in 36 volumes; an additional volume based on his notes appeared in 1789 was originally intended to cover all three "kingdoms" of nature but the Histoire naturelle ended up being limited to the animal and mineral kingdoms and the animals covered were only the birds and quadrupeds. "Written in a brilliant style this work was read . by every educated person in Europe". Those who assisted him in the production of this great work included Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton Philibert Guéneau de Montbeillard and Gabriel-Léopold Bexon along with numerous artists. Buffon's Histoire naturelle was translated into many different languages making him one of the most widely read authors of the day a rival to Montesquieu Rousseau and Voltaire. In the opening volumes of the Histoire naturelle Buffon questioned the usefulness of mathematics criticized Carl Linnaeus's taxonomical approach to natural history outlined a history of the Earth with little relation to the Biblical account and proposed a theory of reproduction that ran counter to the prevailing theory of pre-existence. The early volumes were condemned by the Faculty of Theology at the Sorbonne. Buffon published a retraction but he continued publishing the offending volumes without any change. In the course of his examination of the animal world Buffon noted that despite similar environments different regions have distinct plants and animals a concept later known as Buffon's Law. This is considered to be the first principle of biogeography. He made the suggestion that species may have both "improved" and "degenerated" after dispersing from a center of creation. In volume 14 he argued that all the world's quadrupeds had developed from an original set of just thirty-eight quadrupeds. On this basis he is sometimes considered a "transformist" and a precursor of Darwin. He also asserted that climate change may have facilitated the worldwide spread of species from their centres of origin. Still interpreting his ideas on the subject is not simple for he returned to topics many times in the course of his work. Buffon considered the similarities between humans and apes but ultimately rejected the possibility of a common descent. He debated with James Burnett Lord Monboddo on the relationship of the primates to man Monboddo insisting against Buffon on a close relationship. At one point Buffon propounded a theory that nature in the New World was inferior to that of Eurasia. He argued that the Americas were lacking in large and powerful creatures and that even the people were less virile than their European counterparts. He ascribed this inferiority to the marsh odours and dense forests of the American continent. These remarks so incensed Thomas Jefferson that he dispatched twenty soldiers to the New Hampshire woods to find a bull moose for Buffon as proof of the "stature and majesty of American quadrupeds". In Les époques de la nature 1778 Buffon discussed the origins of the solar system speculating that the planets had been created by a comet's collision with the sun. He also suggested that the Earth originated much earlier than 4004 BC the date determined by Archbishop James Ussher. Basing his figures on the cooling rate of iron tested at his Laboratory the Petit Fontenet at Montbard he calculated that the age of the earth was 75000 years. Once again his ideas were condemned by the Sorbonne and once again he issued a retraction to avoid further problems. De L'Imprimerie Royal. Paris. hardcover

Nissen and Heilbrun differ in the listing of number of plates and misname the descriptions of the plates. First edition of this extensive landmark work in natural science. After his death several other volumes were published making the total number of volumes 44. Together with Diderot's Encyclopaedia this work represents the peak of book printing of the French enlightenment. Buffon was the first to sum up an entire natural history based on science instead of theology; It constitutes one of the first attempts to provide a comprehensive account of the natural world aiming at describing the entire known natural world - including plants animals and minerals - in a single work. Buffon based his work on first-hand observations and scientific analysis rather than on second-hand accounts or mythological beliefs making it a seminal work in the development of modern science. "Buffon's "Natural History General and Particular" presented for the first time a complete survey of natural history in a popular form . he was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation. In 1739 he was appointed Director of the Jardin du Roi now Jardin des Plantes. It would appear that the 'Natural History germinated in the preparation of a catalogue of the royal collection. Buffon then enlarged its scope to Aristotelian or Plinian proportions and finally transformed it into a conspectus of nature of a breadth and depth previously unknown". … he was the first to present the universe as one complete whole and to find no phenomenon calling for any but a purely scientific explanation." PMM. Buffon's work had a significant impact upon the field of natural history and influenced many other scientists including Charles Darwin; In a part of the work "Des Epoqeus de la Nature" Supplement vol. V 1778 present here Buffon attacked several Christian doctrines on natural science. He saw man as a part of the animal world he objected to earth being only 6000 years old and he dismissed a rigid classification system thus paving the way for Darwin's thoughts a century later:"Georges Buffon set forth his general views on species classification in the first volume of his Histoire Naturelle. Buffon objected to the so-called "artificial" classifications of Andrea Cesalpino and Carolus Linnaeus stating that in nature the chain of life has small gradations from one type to another and that the discontinuous categories are all artificially constructed by mankind. Buffon suggested that all organic species may have descended form a small number of primordial types; this is an evolution predominantly from more perfect to less perfect forms." Parkinson Breakthroughs. "Buffon's work is of exceptional importance because of its diversity richness originality and influence. Buffon was among the first to create an autonomous science free of any theological influence. He emphasized the importance of natural history and the great length of geological time. He envisioned the nature of science and understood the roles of paleontology zoological geography and animal psychology. He realised both the necessity of transformism and its difficulties. Although his cosmogony was inadequate and his theory of animal reproduction was weak and although he did not understand the problem of classification he did establish the intellectual framework within which most naturalists up to Darwin worked." DSB From the library of Danish zoologist Jonas Collin 1840-1905 who issued a new edition of Kjærbølling's "The Birds of Scandinavia" in 1875-1877 See Anker 251 - a work most likely inspired by his knowledge from his i.e. the present copy of Buffon's "Histoire Naturelle".The 'Histoire Générale' was widely reprinted and translated. Sometimes only individual sections were produced other times the complete work appeared. PMM 198.Nissen 672.Brunet I 376.Dibner 193.Sparrow p. 23.Anker 6. hardcover

Pasteur "A developing science depended on The Natural History of Man a work that was found to possess the functional capacity of extending the boundaries of knowledge. 'Buffon enlarged all the questions he touched on furthermore he created new questions' Flourens 1850:155. As soon as the 'varieties' and therefore the variations in man became the central issue to be elucidated the analysis of the biological and sociological mechanisms responsible for creating racial differences became more diversified. A discipline was thus created one that would rapidly differentiate between its objects of inquiry and its techniques of inquiry. It can be seen then that without any kind of break the Buffonian ideology of man retrospectively discovered a scholarly solution in what Thomas Kuhn called a 'disciplinary matrix' a hard kernel of statements principles deductive links and exemplary cases that allowed work on proofs to proceed within a framework of cumulative knowledge. At the origin of this process of'crystallization' there was neither the stroke of intuitive genius of a solitary scientist nor a 'great idea' divorced from its social pre-text. Instead there is a complex process whose contextual and biographical foundations as well as future academic and nationalistic issues are revealed by epistemological analysis." Armorial bookplate of the library of the Comte Chevreau d'Antraigues. Interrupted by Buffon's death in 1788 the vast undertaking of the Histoire naturelle found its natural continuation in Étienne de Lacépède. Called upon during the final years of Buffon's life to carry forward the unfinished sections he successively published the volumes devoted to oviparous quadrupeds and serpents followed by those on fishes and cetaceans before undertaking a new arrangement of the entire work. Begun under his supervision this edition continued after his death in October 1825 concluding with the publication of the supplementary volume in 1828. Its illustration owes much to Jean-Gabriel Prêtre one of the foremost animal painters of his generation. Trained in Geneva before joining Empress Joséphine's menagerie at Malmaison and later the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle he devoted much of his career to depicting newly described species with remarkable accuracy; several still bear his name today. The present copy comes from the library of the Comte Chevreau d'Antraigues as evidenced by its armorial bookplate a recognised provenance on the French antiquarian book market where a number of books from the same library have appeared over the years. One of the finest editions of Buffon's Histoire naturelle bringing together for the first time in a coherent and uniform set the work as finally arranged by Lacépède. A. Eymery hardcover

Buffon precedes it with an important préface du traducteur in which he praises not only Hales Je ne connais rien de mieux dans son genre et le genre par lui-même est excellent. but above all scientific experiment emblematic of the emergence of modern science: Amassons-donc toujours des expériences et éloignons nous s'il est possible de tout esprit de système du moins jusqu'à ce que nous soyons instruits . c'est cette méthode que mon auteur a suivie ; c'est celle du grand Newton ; c'est celle que Messieurs de Verulam Galilée Boyle Sthall Stahl ont recommandée et embrassée c'est celle que l'Académie des Sciences s'est fait une loi d'adopter . The plates executed with great finesse depict the machines devised notably his famous water apparatus and the processes used by Hales to demonstrate the circulation of sap and the production of gases in the plants he studied. The second treatise following the research of William Harvey and Marcello Malpighi deals with blood circulation. It is in this work that Hales recounts his experiment on arterial pressure using one of his inventions a precursor of the sphygmomanometer.
