2022rif. 202202East Hampton NY: Eric Firestone Press 2022. Softcover. VG: A book in excellent condition. Looks like it has rarely been taken from the shelf. A matte softcover book. The cover is light blue with a darker blue design wrapped around. The title is printe in white on the front cover and down the spine. The inside of each cover is a photograph. Pages: 4 5-63 1. "Like many great artists Paul Waters's paintings tell a story. Seemingly simple these snapshots capture the ethos of a specific time and place. Like Norman Lewis and Jacob Lawrence Paul rendered compositions in semi-abstract form. In them silhouettes of human bodies take on animal characteristics. Birdlike forms float across the picture plane. Cutting from the pages of magazines and pasting to the canvas Waters creates mathematically balanced monochromatic vignettes. Composed between 1965 and 1973 during the height of the Civil Rights Movement his paintings not only convey images of the African American community but also are closeups of intimate movements in his personal and professional life." rif. 159mdFlagstaff AZ: Northland Press MCMLXIV. First Edition. Folio black cloth hardcover gilt letters 114 pp. Near-Fine with neat former-owner stamp; in a Near-Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Leon Gaspard is not just the story of Leon Gaspard the painter. This story colorfully recaptures all the adventures and delightful highlights of the man who was known and loved in his native Russia the capitals of Europe and throughout the American Southwest which was his home for forty years. Leon Gaspard was born in Russia in 1882 and died in Taos New Mexico early in 1964. During his life he spanned incredible times and spaces -- from the turn-of-the-century Paris of the Bohemians to the ageless Tibet of the Grand Lama -- from the ancient Forbidden City of Peking to the almost-today Taos of Mabel Dodge Luhan and D. H. Lawrence. Surely only a man as vital and as sentient as Gaspard could have encompassed them all. Northland Press, MCMLXIV. First Edition. hardcover books
