1954Best.-Nr. 304860Washington DC: Agnes Waters 1954. Four different 8.5x11 inch leaflets one of them a single sheet the others 4 pages; they are marked in pencil by the original recipient "From Agnes Waters Anti-Semite." Otherwise minor handling wear. The single-page leaflet is titled "Help save America!" One of the four-pagers is titled "The All Engulfing Terror or The World Tetrarchy" and the other two are open letters reprinted from the pages of the far-right publication Women's Voice. Each item cites Waters as "Only woman candidate for President of the United States." Waters has been called the most inflammatory speaker from the Mothers' Movement a network of far-right isolationist women's groups that sought to prevent the US from entering WWII and after it had begun sought withdrawal. Here a decade later she blames the Jews for the Korean War. As a sample of her tone this passage describes a chance encounter on the street in Washington DC during a visit by British officials: "Well when Churchill and Eden passed by I said to them 'No War Mr. Churchill NO WAR!' then came Anthony Eden and I said the same thing to him; and Mr. Churchill bowed low before me! I went into the street weeping! the whole panorama of wars was passing thru my mind like a picture and I cried out loud in the public place so I felt ashamed of my tears! so I decided to hide myself away in a small hotel across the street from The Statler Hotel and running over there I ran right into that devil of a Barney Baruch! Well my tears changed like lightning to HOLY FURY! and I almost grabbed that big horsy-looking Jew by the throat! I know him when I see him and he KNOWS ME TOO! as we have often seen each other on the Hill in battles there where I was fighting him and his JEWS! It was like The Holy Ghost taking ahold of me! I was So FURIOUS! and what I said to him is beyond the pale of print to write down! But the gist of it was that I whirled in my tracks and paced him down the street to the corner and gave him all hell at every step! The Jew Herbert Morrison was with him at his other side and this little pot-bellied JEW is the Secretary of The British Labor Party! I told Baruch in this Jew's hearing and good and loud too so that a big crowd gathered to hear me yell at him that if he took us to war again that there would not be a Jew left living from New York to San Francisco! and that he better weigh every word I said well as there was a million Americans behind every word I said! I also informed him that we were wise to his old tricks of getting us mass-murdered in his hell-holes and that Guatemala was another one that would not fool us! I called him every name I could think of too! When I left him he was as white as a sheet! and I KNEW HE WAS DEFEATED. for he well knows that his game is up now and that there will be a revolt of the American people if these Jews get us into war again! Vintage original film script 11 x 8 1/2" 28 x 22 cm 109 pp. Script designated as Revised Second Draft by Daniel Waters and dated November 17 1987. Printed New World Pictures studio wrappers brad bound near fine. Heathers is a teen black comedy and debut film directed by Michael Lehmann. The film stars Winona Ryder Christian Slater Shannen Doherty Lisanne Falk Kim Walker and Penelope Milford. Its plot portrays four teenage girls -- three of whom are named Heather -- in a clique at an Ohio high school one of whose lives is disrupted by the arrival of a misanthrope intent on murdering the popular students and staging their deaths as suicides. Waters wrote Heathers as a spec script and originally wanted Stanley Kubrick to direct the film out of admiration for Kubrick's own black comedy film Dr. Strangelove. Waters intended the film to contrast the optimistic teen movies of the era particularly those written by John Hughes by presenting a cynical depiction of high school imbued with dark satire. 1934Best.-Nr. 206451934. Waters Ethel group of six items dating from 1934 to 1959 documents the stage and screen career of Ethel Waters a central figure in twentieth century African American performance history whose work in theater music and film intersected with the integration of American entertainment industries. Rising to prominence in Harlem during the 1920s as a jazz and blues vocalist Waters became one of the highest paid Black recording artists of her era and later broke racial barriers on Broadway and in television. Her starring role in As Thousands Cheer established one of the earliest instances of integrated billing between Black and white performers on the Broadway stage while later productions and film roles expanded her presence across national audiences. Her repertoire including "Stormy Weather" and "Am I Blue" achieved lasting recognition in American music history and her public persona and personal life contributed to her reception within queer audiences including lesbian and gay communities. Archive of six items comprising two original black and white silver gelatin press photographs and four playbills spanning theater and film productions from 1934 to 1959. Materials include: 1 Playbill for As Thousands Cheer. Chicago: Shubert Grand Opera House November 5 1934. Four pages. Documents Waters' featured performance in Irving Berlin's production noted for integrated billing and for introducing the song "Heat Wave." 2 Playbill for Cabin in the Sky. Chicago: Selwyn Theatre May 4 1941. Sixteen pages with cover image of Waters alongside Todd Duncan and Dooley Wilson. Early all Black musical production with a sustained theatrical run. 3 Press photograph for Cabin in the Sky film. 1943. Approximately 7 x 9.5 inches. April 9 1959. Approximately 7.5 x 9 inches. Depicts Waters with Joanne Woodward and Yul Brynner; verso retains press caption. Final film role of Waters. These materials trace Waters' movement from early integrated Broadway performance through mid century theatrical revivals and into late career film work providing a continuous record of African American participation in mainstream entertainment across multiple media. Productions such as Cabin in the Sky and The Member of the Wedding situate Waters within a cohort of Black performers who expanded narrative and representational possibilities on stage and screen during a period of segregation and limited roles. The inclusion of both playbills and press photography documents the promotional and institutional frameworks through which Black performers were presented to audiences while the chronological range captures shifts from Harlem Renaissance performance circuits to postwar film adaptation. Light handling wear with minor edge wear to playbills; photographs retain strong contrast and clear detail with intact press captions. Overall very good condition. unknown books
