Bound in half red morocco tooled in gilt matching red cloth sides ruled in gilt. Contents clean no inscriptions some acceptable wear to covers small crack to upper joint. A very good copy. 'Waters' is considered among the first and most prolific authors to write 'police memoirs' or detective stories. From 1849-1852 he contributed an irregular series of stories to Chambers' Edinburgh Journal. Ten of these were published in pirated book-form editions in New York in 1852 and 1853 entitled The Recollections of a Policeman. The same ten plus two additional stories were then collated into an official volume entitled Recollections of a Detective Police-Officer published in London in 1856. In the same year twenty-one stories were authorised for publication in America the present volume being the most comprehensive of all the early versions.
