1890Best.-Nr. AL.ALB-0021890. Photo album; printing-out-paper prints 45. A charming album with diminutive detailed photographs of California scenes. The album begins with twelve views of Stanford University followed by seven views of California missions including Mission Dolores Mission Santa Barbara Mission San Gabriel Mission San Fernando Mission San Buenaventura and a portrait of three elderly Native American women at Mission San Luis Rey. The remaining twenty-seven photos offer views of San Francisco with shots of Fort Point Sutro Baths the Cliff House Golden Gate Park downtown and Chinatown. In 1892 R. J. Waters opened a photography studio at 1945 California Street and later moved to 110 Sutter Street. He was a multi-talented and entrepreneurial commercial photographer with a keen understanding of the use of the photograph as souvenir object. He created everything from a handsome series of Lake Tahoe boudoir cards to novelty photographic playing cards to impressive panoramas of the 1906 Earthquake. His "Nickel series" offered detailed small-format souvenir photos of notable California sites. Each 3 x 3 3/4 inches ; With captions and Waters' credit in the negative. unknown

Waters to General Sir Herbert Taylor Military secretary and adc to the Duke First Private Secretary to King George III King George IV and King William IV. An important letter regarding subscriptions to erect a monument in memory of "the lamented Duke of York" who has been "has been falsely and shamefully traduced by the Catholic Leaders for his constitutional candid & manly opposition to any further concessions being allowed them" and "for his resolute declaration to uphold the principles which placed the desired House of Brunswick on the Throne". Also referring to a Madame des Mallet. Good condition with edge toning/creasing and browning to folds/edges. Includes a typed transcript by a previous owner with speculation over the identity of Madame des Mallet including whether she might have been a mistress to the Duke of Kent. Prince Frederick Duke of York and Albany 16 August 1763 – 5 January 1827; second son of King George III. Mocked perhaps unfairly in the rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York": The towering Duke of York Column on Waterloo Place just off The Mall London was completed in 1834 as a memorial to Prince Frederick.
