1939réf. 3147771939. 8 x 10 inches. Small blemish at upper right colored-in two old mounts on verso otherwise fine. 8 x 10 inches. Inscribed photograph of African-American television theater and film pioneer Ethel Waters 1896-1977 depicting her in one of her most famous roles and inscribed: "To Alice with the same devotion Hagar has for Lissa and you have for Natalie I have for you Ethel Waters." The photograph shows Waters as Hagar in the Broadway production of Mamba's Daughters 1939 a role which was adapted specifically for her by Dorothy and Dubose Hayward from their novel of the same name; it has been cited as the first dramatic starring role for an African-American actress ANB. On June 14 1939 Waters became the first African-American to host a television program when NBC broadcast "The Ethel Waters Show" a one-hour variety program which included a scene from Mamba's Daughters. The Alice of the inscription is Alice D. Laughlin 1895-1952 muralist engraver and designer who co-founded with designer Natalie Hays Hammond 1904-1985 the Stage Alliance which produced "Six Miracle Plays" directed by and starring Martha Graham at the Guild Theater in 1933. Hammond and Laughlin together with Phyillis Connard constituted a small colony of women artists in Gloucester Massachusetts at the Hammond compound designed by architect Eleanor Raymond. Ethel Waters first made a name for herself as a blues singer on the club circuit; her stage career began when Irving Berlin cast her in As Thousands Cheer 1933 after hearing her perform "Stormy Weather" at the Cotton Club. In 1949 she became the second African-American to be nominated for an Academy Award Best Supporting Actress for her role in Pinky. 2022réf. 202202East Hampton NY: Eric Firestone Press 2022. Softcover. VG: A book in excellent condition. Looks like it has rarely been taken from the shelf. A matte softcover book. The cover is light blue with a darker blue design wrapped around. The title is printe in white on the front cover and down the spine. The inside of each cover is a photograph. Pages: 4 5-63 1. "Like many great artists Paul Waters's paintings tell a story. Seemingly simple these snapshots capture the ethos of a specific time and place. Like Norman Lewis and Jacob Lawrence Paul rendered compositions in semi-abstract form. In them silhouettes of human bodies take on animal characteristics. Birdlike forms float across the picture plane. Cutting from the pages of magazines and pasting to the canvas Waters creates mathematically balanced monochromatic vignettes. Composed between 1965 and 1973 during the height of the Civil Rights Movement his paintings not only convey images of the African American community but also are closeups of intimate movements in his personal and professional life." 1981réf. 19913New Line Cinema Corp 1981. NA. Fine. John Waters added another dimension to film going with Odorama making the sordid settings the more vivid by engaging your nostrils. Smell cards were a gimmick tried out in a handful of movies in the 1950s when the movie industry were desperate to win back audiences who were choosing to stay home and watch television. As far as we know Waters was the first to work with the sense of smell in years and now when one thinks of the movies with scripted odors Polyester is the movie that comes to mind. Part of the thrill of a Waters movie was the joy of being thoroughly grossed out and oh how Odorama delivered as audiences laughed hysterically as they screamed ughs and yucks. Our Odorama card is unused and in all respects in mint condition. We have not scratched the dots to test the purity of the stenches concentrated underneath. As to that caveat emptor. The card measures 28 by 13 cm. The front has stills of the actors Divine shown with her inimitable expressions and in one photo as a man she often played male characters as well as her trademark drag in her movies. The other side well it is dormant waiting for someone to release its explosion of smells. New Line Cinema Corp unknown books
