1788réf. 47371Paris. 1788-1789. All Manner of Reptiles "One of the earliest treatises on natural history by this associate of Buffon" - Wood. Lacepede planned his work after assisting Buffon in his famous Histoire Naturelle. This work covers reptiles and a later work concerned itself with fishes. Lacepede always retained a love of an elegant and elevated style characteristic of Buffon's work but after his death in 1789 Lacepede increasingly came under the influence of Daubenton. The treatise is illustrated with sixty-three full page engravings showing lizards turtles frogs and snakes. A distinguishing feature of Lacepede's work is the large folding tables containing classifying orders according to the Linnaean system of nomenclature. Since he believed the classification system to be artificial and not natural he often invented taxa for which no species existed in order to ensure symmetry in his tables. Thick quarto. Contemporary patterned calf spines gilt leather labels. Head and foot of spines chipped corners lightly bumped hinges tender. Minor scattered foxing. Table in front of first volume torn in gutter margin. Very good. WOOD 424. NISSEN ZBI 2346. hardcover books

Saugrain had apparently wanted to feature Lacépède's name in a prospectus for the Histoire naturelle; Lacépède responded by stating that although he was "as much touched as flattered by the esteem and affection you are pleased to show me" he was "far from believing" that his name "might add to the success of the edition of the Histoire naturelle that you are undertaking." He asked Saugrain that if the prospectuses had not yet been printed "everything concerning me" should be removed "as useless and too little merited." In the second letter written in the third person to genealogist Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais Lacépède informed his correspondent that he was returning "the article Saint-Allais was so kind as to send me and to which I made a short addition because the Mémoires of Philippe de Commines were on my desk." He further promised to send a certified copy of a genealogy to the French city of Vienne which he would deposit "with great pleasure" in Saint-Allais's collection. Saint-Allais was the head of the Bureau Générale de la Noblesse de France. "Commines" refers to French historian and diplomat Philippe de Commines 1447-1511 whose Mémoires were published in 1524. . unknown books
