Walker. A small tear to world map. Clean and fine. First appearance of this classic pioneering paper on the investigation of tidal phenomena. It is the first in a series of 16 papers Whewell made for the Royal Society. It contains the first printed cotidal world-map."Whewell took over the subject of mapping cotidal lines from Lubbock with entusiasm. He exercised the pioneer's privilege of coining new words and phrases appropriate to his subject. Many failed to stick some phrases of Whewell's origin still occasionally used are: 'age of the tides' 'luni-tidal interval' 'semi-menstrual inequality' etc etc.Whewell's initial cotidal map for the world ocean was presented in his first paper of 1833 the paper offered. By his own admission it was entirely preliminary and tentative what nowadays might be called a "strawman" to stimulate discussionm. He later 1836 suggested smll modifications especially near the coast of North America; these were incorporated in an 'improved' world map by G.B. Airy in his celebrated tratise on "Tides and wave" Cartwright in "Tides. A Scientific History" pp.110-112. unknown

1999Best.-Nr. #3985-71919AKInscribed FTP else contents appear as new unopened & unblemished in like pictorial wraps as shown. Synopsis: Anecdotal lore about our fishing presidents. Historic photos political cartoons excerpts from journals letters diaries interviews. "Lighthearted and entertaining." Bill Mares brings to hand a truly enjoyable collection about big men doing small things. Mares has captured an important facet of fishing: it is the only sport that both reduces the Greats to Mere Mortals and gives us mere mortals a chance to be Great. To wit: Eisenhower was skunked on the Furnace Brook in Vermont yet after his security entourage pulled out the locals used worms to clean out the stocked fish that denied Ike his day on the river. This book glides along like hearing a story. Mare's subject is so interesting his book has been read by my Hong Kong-born wife who does not fish. After she put down the book my fly-fishing 6 year old daughter grabbed it. Go figure. The photographs alone are worth the cover price. Especially the one of Nixon swaddled in wet rags. Insurance & handling is included free. Extra Charges/Fees apply on Shipments Outside The U.S. and Expedited Shipments. Oversize and/or heavy books may require additional fees. Will advise.
