Iniziata la sua attivita' come professore di filosofia nei Licei, nel 1880 approdo' all'Ateneo bolognese con un insegnamento di antropologia presso la Facolta' di Lettere.Dalla filosofia e filologia indoeuropea passo' a occuparsi di psicologia e pedagogia, aderendo all'indirizzo positivista sulla linea di Spencer. In quest'ambito si collocano Teoria fisiologica della percezione (1881) e L'origine dei fenomeni psichici e loro significato biologico (1888). Mori' a Roma nel 1936.
