1995167 pages including index. Neatly typed presentation bookplate upon half-title page. The controversy that surrounds BC's forests has produced a mountain of contradictory words. Most people don't know what to believe. The Working Forest Project tries to solve that problem by showing the BC forest as it really is - in photographs. In the past two years the Working Forest Project, initiated by forester Ike Barber and led by forester Gerry Burch, undertook the most comprehensive photographic documentation ever attempted of the BC forest, showing the good and the bad. On the way it interviewed the professional foresters who manage the working forest, and writer Peter Robson put together a concise and factual explanation of the state of British Columbia's forests in the 1990s. This visually stunning book contains over 200 full-colour photographs and graphs showing an overview of forestry in British Coumbia. Special emphasis is given to the areas which have been logged over the years, with many time-lapse photographs comparing original clearcuts to the second-growth forests which have regrown on the sites. Book
1981100 pages. Abundantly illustrated in colour. Includes references, glossary and index. "...In a province heavily dependent on its forest products, and as rugged and mountainous as British Columbia, the evidence of logging activity cannot be hidden from view. Nor should we, except in special situations, try to do so. Rather, the Ministry objective will be to address the visual impacts of logging activity on the landscape and incorporate measures to harmonize such impacts. This handbook addresses this objective. It is considered an important tool for the use of those involved in forest, range and recreation management. It is also recommended as a reference source to the wider audience which is interested in the scenic quality of the managed landscapes of the Province." - from the Foreward. Part I examines The Forest Landscape: fundamental elements and factors, visual impacts and perceptions. Part II examines Forest Landscape Management - Techniques and Practices: implementation overview, landscape inventory, detailed landscape analysis, design lay-out, logging and silvicultural practices and follow-up. Appendices include: Identification of Viewpoints and Visible Area Plotting Techniques; Visual Quality Objectives (VQO's); Design Plotting Techniques; Visual Absorption Cabability (VAC); The Use of Computers. 1981150 pages. Abstract as follows: "The vegetation of the Vernon map sheet area is diverse in response to variation in climate and site conditions. The diversity of the plant cover is characterized by vegetation types. The vegetation of the area is characterized by two Regions: the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. Within each region, patterns of zones (climactic climax potential) and subzones (successional patterns) are recognized. A standard reconnaissance vegetation survey was implemented and 290 vegetation plots were located. Computer analysis of the plots resulted in the identification of forty-five vegetation types, representing seral and climax vegetation in the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. For each type the relationships between environmental characteristics and vegetation were assessed. The evaluation of these relationships is important for the application of the vegetation information to resource management. Interpretations of each vegetation type are made for wildlife, forestry and recreation values. The interpretations provide information which can be used to assess relative values of vegetation for different users." Average wear. Unmarked. Minor sticker residue upon illustrated front cover.
