réf. 019713George Yard Lombard Street: William Phillips Published 1803 - 1804. First Issue. Thee volumes well illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 119 hand coloured plates as usual the plates are erratically bound but all are present all edges gilt in Volume 2 bound in modern blue cloth with only very slight signs of use. Despite the rather plain binding the contents are overall in remarkably bright condition. There is a little offsetting of plate on to text and occasionally of text on to plate but there are only six plates where this is really noticeable and of these plate 91 is rather poor. In Volume 1 the second plate is bound slightly on a skew so that the margin protrudes slightly at the top and fore-edge; in Volume 2 a number of the descriptive leaves are bound together at the end rather than opposite the plate they describe. Volume 3 concludes with Thortnon's "Sketch of the Life and Writings of the Late Mr William Curtis 33 pages. Ignoring the minor oddities of the set there is a remarkable freshness about the paper quality and the colouring. . First Edition. Cloth. Good. William Phillips Hardcover

The first three volumes are duplicates from East Malling Research Station librray the only marking being a stamp on the half-title and shelf numbers on the spines very clean internally stoutly bound in a good red quarter leather and cloth binding. Volume Four is smartly bound in brown cloth. Overall quite an attractive set. The second volume has an inscriptin from the authors and was originally given the othe botanist F.W. Andrews. A heavy set - extra postage will be needed. The Flora not unexpectedly is an unusual work. It is a labour of love clearly carried out unhurriedly in the tradition of those great botanical scholars Tackholm would emulate. It has been hailed as a model of scholarship and completeness. One special feature is the detailed treatment of the extensive ancient Egyptian tomb flora; another is the attention paid throughout the volumes to agriculturally important plants and economic botany. Also the enormous bibliographies which provide access to the ancient and modern Arabic literature are gems" - extracted from Abraham D. Krikorian's obituary in "Nature". First Edition. The first Italian edition. Ferrari 1584 - 1655 was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome and a botanist. He devoted himself till 1632 to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and published De Florum Cultura which was illustrated with copperplates by amongst others Anna Maria Vaiani possibly the first female copper-engraver. The first book deals with the design and maintenance of the garden and garden equipment. The second book provides descriptions of the different flowers while the third book deals with the culture of these flowers. The fourth book continues with a treatise on the use and beauty of the flower species including their different varieties and mutations. The plants featured in Ferrari's research came from Cardinal Francesco Barberini's private botanical garden the Horti Barberini a garden which was under the care of Ferrari. Several Cape bulbs are illustrated for the first time - most notably Haemanthus coccinea but also Amaryllis bella-donna Brunsvigia orientalis and Ferraria crispa. Hunt Library Catalogue rather downbeat in its comment - "The fame rests more on the quality of the engraved plates than on their contribution to botanical knowledge". A reasonably good copy of one of the most influential of eighteenth century gardening books. Blanche Henrey 503. Little is known about Bradley's childhood aside from an early interest in gardening and the fact that he lived in the vicinity of London a city at the time with many amateur naturalists. Though Bradley lacked a university education his first publication Treatise of Succulent Plants gained him traction with influential patrons like James Petiver and later Hans Sloane. With their support he was proposed and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712 at the age of 24. Two years later Bradley visited the Netherlands and took an interest in horticulture. He spent the next decade back in England writing treatises on topics related to this central interest like weather fertiliser productivity and plant hybridisation. In recognition of his work in the field and with the thereafter unfulfilled promise that he would found and fund a university botanical garden the University of Cambridge named Bradley its first professor of botany in 1724 a position he would hold until his death. As Bradley was not a wealthy man in his later life and as this was an unsalaried position the newly minted academic continued to focus most of his efforts on making a living through publishing. According to his rival and successor John Martyn as well as his successor son Thomas Martyn Bradley did this at the expense of his students whom he reportedly neglected to even lecture to. Bradley made notable innovations and discoveries across a wide array of disciplines. For example this work included directions for the making and use of a rudimentary kaleidoscope to aid in formal garden design and layout. He also wrote about cooking and was the first to publish recipes in the English language using the then-exotic pineapple as the main ingredient. His History of Succulent plants was the seminal treatise on the topic and his studies of tulips and auriculas helped further accurate theories of plant reproduction. Bradley was also a pioneer in the examining of fungal spore germination and the pollination of plants by insects. His publications additionally contained information on how to build and use greenhouses early theories regarding agricultural productivity and pond ecology. . Sixth edition. Half-Leather. Fair. Knight was the brother of Payne Knight and the second President of the Royal Horticultural Society. Attention was first called to his work in 1795 by the publication of the results of his research into the propagation of fruit trees and the diseases prevalent among them. He used 10000 acres 4000 ha of land he inherited to conduct breeding of plants including strawberries cabbages and peas and built an extensive greenhouse. Knight performed basic physiological experiments on plants which work had been performed before only rarely. He elucidated the effects of gravity on seedlings and how decay in fruit trees was passed on by grafting. In many respects his work looked back to that of Rev. Stephen Hales. His goals were always strictly practical aiming to improve useful food plants by breeding for better qualities. The Downton strawberry was the ancestor of most important modern strawberries until recent times. It is not widely known that he studied variation in peas and found many of the same results as Mendel but he failed to make the same imaginative leap about how these changes took place. Knight intentionally shut himself off from outside scientific influences. He refused to read anyone else's scientific papers until Sir Joseph Banks with whom he had a voluminous correspondence persuaded him to do so. First Edition. Cloth. Fair.
