Best.-Nr. 007394Mexico presumed. NA. Good. Brightly colored exuberant specimen of Mexican Folk Art depicting peasants and their shacks. The human figures 20 in all are highly stylized with many shown in profile reminiscent of Ancient Egyptian human representations. A few of the peasants are shown looking head-on. The figures are also from one or two molds -- the same image is repeated more or less but with the dress varied mainly in the choice of colors. Most of the human figures are barefoot with a few wearing sandals as surely would have been the everyday experience of rural life at same time and place. The peasants are arranged in a field with semi-abstract representations of flowers stalks and seedlings. Amidst the people there is a single ox. Some of the peasants look as if they're waving at us. While generally the peasants look impassive or expressionless a few have the look of agitatoin. The painting is rendered without perspective and we think this was a deliberate choice reinforcing the naive feel of the painting as a whole. Above all else it is the colors that stand out with their rich clarity and immediacy. Surrounding the figurative imagery of the peasants and their hovels there are four or more decorative bands also distinctively colored with mostly geometric repeats the outer band inside two ruled lines linking orange flowers with wavy green frondes. The painting is on vellum that is very papyrus-like. The artwork is signed "Flores" with the first part of the signature "Greserv C90" an enigma to us. N.d. circa 1930. Condition: moderate to heavy here and there soiling. A few minor tears. unknown books

Best.-Nr. 004923Wraps. Very Good. Scarce with no copies located on OCLC FirstServe. N.d. circa 1914 when the fragrance "Un Air Embaume" was first introduced. 8vo. 24 by 21 cm. Unpaginated 12 leaves plus tissue guards and wraps with nine of those being color plates. Rigaud as a parfumier dates back to 1852. At the turn of the century it created and marketed fragrances associated with celebrities of the day -- one fragrance was named after the opera star "Mary Garden" -- and the company might well have been a pioneer in such tie-ins. The company also consciously pursued the Anglo market and capitalized on the Gallic vogue at the time for things English by naming a number of its products in English. The company remains in business today but its emphasis it now on home or ambient fragrances. In this glossy marketing brochure intended as much to build the exotic luxurious mystique of the companies fragrances as to peddle its specific products the color plates capture perfectly the sinewy rich aesthetic of the day with equal amounts of Art Nouveau elegance; the overripe almost lurid colors and styles of the Jugendstil or the Teutonic version of Art Nouveau; and the softer Rococo frivolity and flirty lightness epitomized by a Fragonard or Boucher. The Richepin poem that serves as a preface evokes the hedonistic possibly decadent sensuality that is the mood or mix of moods of the illustrations that follow. And so the names of perfumes are Prince Igor Marthe Chenal a French opera singer who like Mary Garden was particularly associated with Jules Massenet Pres de Vous Muses des Bois l'heure charmante lilas de Rigaud Oeillet d'Andalousie Mary Garden and des Roses. Meehan 1826-1901 was a noted botanist of his day. While he wrote a number of serious scholarly works on the subject this book was an attempt to reach a wider more popular audience. Meehan goal for this work was to improve popular comprehension of the subject without sacrificing good science and by the way at a price people could afford. The concept of bringing more sophisticated botanical knowledge to a wider audience was rare. However Meehan received a lot of critical success for this effort at that time Nissen Botany 1331. 1951Best.-Nr. 530781London: Cowles Magazines Inc. 1951. Softcover. Very Good. Periodical. Quarto. 120pp. Heavily illustrated. A bit musty. Cover with a split and a bit of loss at the spine staples somewhat oxidized modest interior toning very good. Signed by John Steinbeck editor Fleur Cowles and contributor William Ward Beecher. The final issue of this very interesting magazine sent by editor Fleur Cowles along with a warm Typed Letter Signed to artist William Ward Beecher to commemorate the collaboration. Fleur has Signed the magazine on the first page. Beecher allowed the use of a black and white reproduction of a Steinbeck-themed trompe l'oeil painting to illustrate the article "Tortilla B Flat: A Serenade to John Steinbeck Composed on the Typewriter" by Eddie Condon also illustrated with a portrait of Steinbeck by Robert Capa. A note in Beecher's hand laid in says: "N.B. this copy autographed by Fleur Cowles is also signed by John and me-" and indeed Steinbeck has Signed above the painting and Beecher beneath it. Also laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from a Flair employee to Beecher asking him to sign an agreement to reproduce the artwork. A 2001 letter from Steinbeck's son Thom written to supply details about sitting for a portrait by Beecher called the artist a family friend and that his father "maintained an abiding fascination for Beecher's work through the years. A half-dozen examples of the artist's best canvases still brighten our house in New York." A nice association. Cowles Magazines, Inc.) unknown books

1957Best.-Nr. 534842Guadalajara México: Et Cætera 1957. Softcover. Very Good. Offprint. Translated by Miguel Rodríguez Puga misspelled "Juga". Small slim quarto. 99-108pp. Stapled printed wrappers. Text in Spanish. Wrappers with tiny chips at the bottom corners and a couple of very short splits staples lightly oxidized and paper evenly toned a very good example of a relatively delicate pamphlet. From the library of noted Spanish philologist librarian and linguist Tomás Navarro Tomás with a six-line note on the first page some bracketing and underlining in the text and 27 lines in Spanish at the end all in red ink. While the practice of combining the words "magic" and "realism" had been around since the 1920s - with entire books having been written on the subject - this is the paper that popularized the term "magical realism" for the genre of Latin American fiction as we know it today. Flores who found the movement's genesis in Borges' publication of A Universal History of Infamy in 1935 first presented this paper at the Spanish 4 Group Meeting of the 69th Annual Meeting of the MLA in New York December 27-29 1954. It was published in English in the journal Hispania in May 1955 Vol. 38 No. 2. This offprint is from its Spanish-language publication in the important Guadalajara literary magazine Et Cætera Nos. 23-25 July 1957 - March 1958. This is quite likely the offprint of its first Spanish-language publication; information appears to be slight but we do find it cited next to the English-language edition in a footnote of Luis Leal's classic 1967 essay on the subject "Magical Realism in Spanish American Literature" accessed online via an English anthology published by Duke. A rare and early offprint of a pivotal essay on Latin American literature with annotations by a noted Spanish philologist and linguist. OCLC locates no copies of this Mexican offprint nor does it locate any copies of an offprint in English if one was even published. Et Cætera unknown books

Text leaves with faint mottled foxing and minor browning and off-setting just a few plates with negligible faint spots or smudges otherwise A WONDERFUL COPY THE ORIGINAL SPARKLING BINDING IN AN AMAZING STATE OF PRESERVATION. This is a sumptuously bound copy of three manuals intended to teach the art of drawing to young persons written by the accomplished botanical painter who produced the renowned "Pomona Britannia." In an earlier career Brookshaw ca. 1751-1823 was a successful London cabinet-maker whose painted Neoclassical furniture attracted such titled enthusiasts as the Duke of Devonshire and the Prince of Wales but he suddenly abandoned this livelihood in the 1790s. Art historian Lucy Wood speculates that the sudden change was prompted by involvement in a financial or sexual scandal as he also parted company with his wealthy wife around this time. He spent a decade living under the name "G. Brown" teaching flower painting to refined young ladies before producing his first manual "A New Treatise of Flower Painting" which was finally issued under his real name in 1816. The three guides that make up the present volume were intended as a supplement to that work and they expand the subjects covered to fruit and birds. In the preface to this work Brookshaw observes that flower painting is a "peculiarly appropriate" accomplishment that may be obtained "without the expense of a Master a few elementary instructions and good copies being sufficient." The plates here are more highly finished than the examples in his original "Treatise" in order to "lead the young artist onward in a progressive line of improvement." Fruits and birds are added to offer a new challenge for the pupil and Brookshaw notes that while avian subjects lack the variety of botanical ones they compensate with "the inifinite number of attitudes they assume." Our elaborate and immaculately preserved binding is testament that our volume was never used as a drawing manual but was more likely enjoyed for its own merits as an attractive object.
