First edition 8vo pp. 141 1; frontispiece and 17 leaves of plates one leaf loose and another nearly so; original brown cloth gilt title on cover and spine; lower board stained text clean all the plates a little shaken good. The Sheltons along with the Ogdens established the first missionary outpost in Batang in the Kham region of Tibet. Flora's husband Albert Shelton raised funds by selling artifacts and photographs to the Newark Museum and private collectors including Rockefeller and became famous for his indefatigable work in a difficult and contested region. After surviving one abduction in 1920 he ultimately perished after being attacked by highwaymen on his way to Markam Gartok. Flora Shelton continued her missionary work after her husband's death but left little record of her activities beyond this book and another published after her husband's death. Yakushi S409. 2010New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). Edition in English. 237, [3] p., color ills. Endemic plants of Turkey. There is a common understanding that "culture" and "nature" are two contradictory, even antagonistic, notions. This book plays an important role in disentangling this stereotype. The interaction of human beings with their environment plays a major role in the formation of culture. Original values of culture are in fact "natural" results of thes interaction. In turn, these values make pople "belong to the lands they live in". The oroginal cultural hertage of Anatolia is a remarkable reflection of this fact.
