He served as a professor of French literature at Lyon until he was fired for publishing a satirical poem that was highly critical of Napoleon III and the Second Empire. Laprade's prose criticisms consist of classical and metaphysical studies as well as wide-ranging commentary on European literature. He disliked irony and skepticism which probably lead him to underrate 18th-century literature. He was also elected to the National Assembly as a conservative in 1871. <!-- if !supportLists-->o <!--endif-->Handwritten – Petrus De Laplasse <!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Binding: Leather; tight and secure <!-- if !supportLists-->· <!--endif-->Size: ~5.25in X 3in 13cm x 8cm Our Guarantee: Very Fast. The first book originally issued in 17 parts of Rene Primevere Lesson's three-volume series on hummingbirds. The book is dedicated to the young Princess Louise d'Artois whose mother Princess Marie-Caroline helped to finance the work. A considerable outlay would have been needed to commission the exquisite engravings based on illustrations by several artists including Jean-Gabriel Pretre and Louis Victor Bevalet. In his dedication Lesson refers to "the gifts of infinite magnificence" bestowed by the Creator upon hummingbirds and the illustrations bear him out. The Pacific coast favorite Anna's hummingbird Calypte anna makes an appearance in these pages and Lesson's description notes that it is "one of the prettiest species in the family." Lesson served as a Navy surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars and later accompanied Louis-Isidore Duperrey on his three-year voyage around the world. In the French Navy the surgeon was usually the de facto naturalist on expeditions and Lesson embraced the assignment with enthusiasm. He was responsible for the zoology section of the official expedition account and also published several monographs on birds. Arthus Bertrand unknown books
