Complete with 86 handcolored copperplate engravings numbered 1 - 85 with Plate 48 in two parts of which 81 depict one or two birds and 5 depict nests or bones. Very Good with moderate wear to covers overopened at several places hinges starting but holding well. Light toning and moderate to heavy foxing throughout. Anker 291 Zimmer p. 386. The first book originally issued in 17 parts of Rene Primevere Lesson's three-volume series on hummingbirds. The book is dedicated to the young Princess Louise d'Artois whose mother Princess Marie-Caroline helped to finance the work. A considerable outlay would have been needed to commission the exquisite engravings based on illustrations by several artists including Jean-Gabriel Pretre and Louis Victor Bevalet. In his dedication Lesson refers to "the gifts of infinite magnificence" bestowed by the Creator upon hummingbirds and the illustrations bear him out. The Pacific coast favorite Anna's hummingbird Calypte anna makes an appearance in these pages and Lesson's description notes that it is "one of the prettiest species in the family." Lesson served as a Navy surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars and later accompanied Louis-Isidore Duperrey on his three-year voyage around the world. In the French Navy the surgeon was usually the de facto naturalist on expeditions and Lesson embraced the assignment with enthusiasm. He was responsible for the zoology section of the official expedition account and also published several monographs on birds. Arthus Bertrand unknown
