Volumes 11-12 in one vol half roan a bit worn and scuffed contents slightly loose; Volumes 22 - 30 in an attractive contemporary half calf and marbled boards slightly marked a little foxing internally but overall very clean and tight. A few plain litho plates and four fine coloured plates - of the Bornean butterfly Ornithoptera trojana forms of Colias edusa aberrations in the Genus Vanessa varieties of Triphaena comes-orbona and one to accompany Gosse's article on Attacus atlas. 1878 - 1879; 1888 - 1897. 1736réf. 6421Sevilla: Juan Francisoc Blas de Quesada 1736. Small octavo 20ff 367pp. The imprimatur and aprobation by censor are dated 1736 in Seville but no date is given on the title page. Palau seems not to have been aware of this book but he does record a "libro segundo" printed in Madrid 1773 with Bishop Salcedo y Azcona as the author. Palau v. xviii 369. OCLC lists several copies of a Seville printing a couple by this printer but no date on any of them; there is one copy only of the Madrid 1773 printing. The title states that it was in fact published by Salcedo y Azcona but that it was written by a Juan Arana SJ 1666-1747. Salcedo y Azcona was a very prominent churchman being successively archbishop of Santiago Compostela and Seville. Neat contemporary signature on ffep. Rare. Small octavo pp 299 the office copy from County of Santa Barbara Department of Agriculture with two neat stamps on the front endpapers and a stamp on top bottom and fore-edge but otherwise extremely clean internally. Brown cloth decorated in green very slightly frayed at the spine head but otherwise very good. Extremely scarce. A highly important work in viticulture. For some twenty years earlier the phylloxera insect had decimated American vineyards having created equal havoc earlier in Europe. Some American vines had natural resistance to the American phylloxera insect and the book promoted hybridisation and grafting using these at first less popular cultivars. First American Edition. Don Diego Barros Arana 1830 - 1907 Chilean historian & investigative writer of Basque origin legislator minister and diplomat; "studied for a legal career but gave up the law to pursue his interests in history and literature. In 1859 the Chilean government exiled him for writing articles critical of the government. While in exile he visited Buenos Aires Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro where he collected historical data and he later did the same in France England and Spain. He was one of the first Latin-American historians to explore the rich Spanish archivessubsequently served as a dean of the humanities faculty at the University of Santiago and as Chilean ambassador to Argentina Uruguay and Brazil. As a historian Barros Arana was more a painstaking investigator and annalist than an interpreter of historical events though his works are somewhat coloured with ideas of Chilean nationalism. His reputation rests upon his monumental Historia general de Chile one of the landmarks of 19th-century Latin-American historiography." Ency. Brit. Info.
