This magnificent book is quite sizeable almost 8 pounds in weight and consists of three reports bound together giving the state of the art for 1902: Central Electric Light and Power Stations Street and Electric Railways and Telephones and Telegraphs. As befits the Census Bureau the book is replete with charts and maps but numerous photos are also included. Equipment distribution finances all are described and more. The book evidently was withdrawn from a school library but the only signs of this are an attractive bookplate and a small call number on the spine. The book is very clean. The front hinge is starting to separate but so far so good. The edges of the textblock are darkened and the corners are bumped but over all the book looks quite good for its age.; Ex-library; Oversize . Government Printing Office hardcover

This is a large heavy volume and if sent outside of the United States would require additional shipping charges. This volume discusses some historical aspects of the First Census and presents such statistics as could be compiled from the limited returns of the first enumeration of the population. Among the topics addressed are Population in the Colonial and Continental Periods; The United States in 1790; The First Census of the United States; Area and Total Population; Populations of Counties and their subdivisions; White and Negro Population; Sex and Age of the White Population; Analysis of the Family; Proportion of Children in White Population; Surnames of the White Population in 1790; Nationality as Indicated by Names of Heads Families Reported at the First Census Interstate Migration; Foreign Born Population; Statistics of Slaves and Occupations and Wealth. A number of General Tables are presented. The results of a modern census have been accurately defined as a national account of stock. Early censuses were merely counts of inhabitants; additional facts relating to population were next secured; and the most recent step in census taking especially in the United States has been to include practically all lines of human activity. The modern census is thus the result of evolution. The United States census plural censuses or census is a census that is legally mandated by the Constitution of the United States. It takes place every ten years. The first census after the American Revolution was taken in 1790 under Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. There have been 23 federal censuses since that time. The census includes Territories of the United States. The United States Census Bureau is responsible for conducting the census. The most recent national census took place in 2020; the next census is scheduled for 2030. Since 2013 the Census Bureau began discussions on using technology to aid data collection starting with the 2020 census. In 2020 every household received an invitation to complete the census over the Internet by phone or by paper questionnaire. For years between the decennial censuses the Census Bureau issues estimates made using surveys and statistical models in particular the Population Estimates Program and American Community Survey. Third American edition of the First Federal Census carried out in 1790 a landmark record in the establishment of Federal powers. The Census was “designed to provide continuity between past and future and to adjust periodically the relative shares of power and resources among the various constituent elements of the population. That much the framers of the Constitution originally intended for the census. Population growth was already rapid in the eighteenth century. Americans knew from the outset that they were creating an experimental form of government that would have to handle social change systematically.” Anderson p236 Signed in print on p. 3: “Truly stated from the original returns deposited in the office of Secretary of State. Th: Jefferson. October 24th 1791” and preceded only by the 1791 and 1798 Philadelphia editions. Howes rates this printing “aa”. Howes R-220. Anderson The American Census. unknown
