È però a partire dal XIX secolo che prendono forma le ricerche storico-critiche sulle religioni. Muovendo dall'epoca rinascimentale e ripercorrendo i secoli successivi, con una particolare insistenza sui profondi mutamenti intellettuali che hanno attraversato il XVIII secolo, Julien Ries ricostruisce le condizioni che hanno condotto alla costituzione delle scienze delle religioni. Ripercorre così la formazione della storia delle religioni nel quadro della cultura europea della fine del XIX secolo, con la nascita delle prime cattedre e l'istituzionalizzazione della disciplina; traccia l'evoluzione dei diversi metodi che, nel corso del XX secolo, hanno caratterizzato il dibattito storico-religioso; disegna il profilo delle personalità che hanno maggiormente influito sulla definizione di un'attuale antropologia del sacro, Georges Dumézil e Mircea Eliade, presentando altresì la biografia degli altri protagonisti delle ricerche religiose, in un amplissimo arco cronologico che va da Griglio Gregorio Giraldi a Claude Lévi-Strauss.
