1850Acquaforte, tratta da 'A series of subiects peculiar to the campagna of Rome and Pontine marshes designed from nature and etched by C. Coleman', edito a Roma nel 1850. A series of subiects peculiar to the campagna of Rome and Pontine marshes designed from nature and etched by C. Coleman. Etching from the 'A series of subiects peculiar to the campagna of Rome and Pontine marshes designed from nature and etched by C. Coleman', printed in Rome in 1850. A fine work, printed on China paper and laid on cardboard, full margins, in perfect condition. Charles Coleman was an English landscape and animal painter, born in Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. He was active primarily in Rome, where he was an important influence on Nino Costa and made a significant contribution to the formation of the School of "Campagna Romana" Painting. From the barren hills of Yorkshire, Charles Coleman arrived in Rome in 1831 and showed himself a passionate painter of the territory surrounding the urbe, publishing in the middle of the century, at the Spithover bookstore, a rich volume with 53 etchings: A series of subiects peculiar to the countryside of Rome and Pontine marshes designed from nature and etched by C. Coleman. The landscapes that Coleman depicts are very similar to the desolate views of his Yorkshire, "windy and inhabited only by heather". In most of the English artist's views, the landscape is presented with vivid contrasts, making Coleman a true master for a generation or two of painters in Rome and beyond. He was contemptuous of academic teaching, believing that observation from nature was the best education for an artist. He exhibited five times at the Royal Academy in London, for the last time in 1869.
Scene of a Thames river bank at Sonning; in the background, farms and buildings; unworked area to the left. Etching and drypoint, 1865, not signed; printed on laid paper, with margins, perfect condition. This impression on laid paper was printed in 1868 for Philip Gilbert Hamerton's very scarce first volume of Etching and Etchers. Image size: 4 x 6 1/4 inches (102 x 157 mm) with an irregular platemark, as printed. Seymour Haden was the unlikely combination of a surgeon and an etcher. Although he pursued a very successful medical career, he is mostly remembered for his etched work as well as for his writings on etching. He was one of a group of artists, including James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) and Alphonse Legros (1837–1911), whose passionate interest in the medium led to the so-called etching revival, a period that lasted well into the twentieth century. The extolling of etching for its inherent spontaneous qualities reached its pinnacle during this time. While the line of the etching needle, Haden wrote, was "free, expressive, full of vivacity," that of the burin was "cold, constrained, uninteresting," and "without identity." 1879L'acquaforte mostra la chiesa di Chelsea e il vecchio Battersea Bridge, e il titolo originale, 'Chelsea', è preferibile anche se alcuni studiosi gli assegnano il nome Fulham. The etchings shows Chelsea Church and old Battersea Bridge, and the original title, 'Chelsea', is preferable although some scholars assign it the name Fulham. Three barges are seen in the middle of the River Thames, the one nearest the bridge manned by two bargees. Behind them is an old bridge, with four wooden piers seen to left, a broad iron span, and then three more piers to right. There are figures, horses and carts on the bridge. Seen through the arches are a steamboat landing-stage, more trees and houses on an embankment on the right, and a suspension-bridge. The tide is low, so that the two right-hand piers are out of the water, and a couple of flat-bottomed barges sit high on the beach to right. To the right, a square church tower rises behind the bridge, the toll-booth is just visible at the end of the bridge, and a substantial square house and other buildings stand at far right, surrounded by tall trees. The etching may have been called 'Fulham' by Wedmore and subsequent cataloguers to distinguish it from other etchings of Battersea Bridge and Chelsea. However, it does not show Fulham. The changes have led to confusion and problems in identifying the subsequent history of this etching. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Lowell, July 10, 1834 - London, July 17, 1903) was an American painter and engraver, rarely mentioned as James Whistler. A genius at producing intaglio etchings, Whistler was among the most inventive and influential printmakers in history, producing nearly 500 works over five decades. Etching offered Whistler the opportunity to combine speed of execution, drawing ideas quickly on the plate, with the ability to refine and develop them through multiple states, highlighting his complex aesthetic. His work, with such an innovative approach, not only attracted followers and imitators, but influenced the entire art world. 1749Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1749, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Allegory on the three ages of man, after Titian; landscape with in the right foreground, seated on the ground, a naked young man and a woman playing pipe, on the left a winged putto stepping over two sleeping children, and beyond an old man contemplating a skull. The painting is now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. From 'Raccolta Di Opere Scelte'.Around 1749 it was decided that the plates executed by Lefevre for the famous "Opera Selectiora" set were to be republished. Because of a change in taste, and because they had worn off, the plates were either retouched with burin work by artists such as Giuseppe Waggner and Johann Gottfried Saiter, or completely remade. The set was published as "Le opere scelte dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio di Cadore, e da Paolo Cagliari di Verona" (Venice, 1749). A second edition, with added plates from the collection of Lovisa, was published by Teodoro Viero (Venice, 1786) under a different title: "Raccolta Di Opere Scelte Dipinte da Tiziano Vecellio, Antonio Regillo detto il Pordenone, Giacomo Robusti detto il Tintoretto, Paolo Calliari Veronese, Dario Varotari detto il Padoanino, Li Bassani, Giacomo Palma, Giuseppe Salviati, e varj altri celebri Maestri della Scola Veneziana, che fiorirono ne' tempi posteriori. Copy, on the same verso, from a niello that belonged to the Durazzo collection, now in Paris, Louvre, Rothschild collection. Inscribed in the flattering banner “SOL IN DEO SPERO”.The inscription (Only in God I Hope) identifies the woman as an allegory of Hope. The feautures of the woman and the very delicate, but regular technique compare well with nielli usually attribued to Francesco Francia as: Hind, Nielli, n. 242 and n. 247. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in prints by owner’s will, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by the amateurs. Bartsch describes these niello prints in his volume published in 1811, a date that therefore constitutes the terminus ante quem for the execution.
Copy of a niello print from the Durazzo Collection (n. 2860) The image also exists in at least three other variants : a Lombard ( ? ) drawing in the Uffizi ( inv . no . 209F ) , falsely inscribed as a portrait of Beatrice d'Este by Leonardo ; a painting in the Metro politan Museum of Art with a forged Dürer monogram ( the painting may itself be a forgery ) and the date 1506 ; and an engraving formerly attributed to Zoan Andrea ( see TIB 2509.026 ) , apparently a fictitious artist now identified with Giovanni Antonio da Brescia ( TIB 2511 ) . Although Dutuit and Blum called the work Venetian , the composition is clearly Lombard , and the print was probably produced in Milan at the end of the fifteenth or the beginning of the sixteenth century . The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Copy, on the same verso, from a niello belonged to the Durazzo collection. On the scroll, in reverse: VA˙INLA˙CA…NEVA Copy, on the same verso, of a niello print formerly kept in the Durazzo collection (n. 2834), now in Paris, Louvre, Cabinet Rothschild collection. This print can be tentatively assigned to northern Italy, and specifically to Bologna. Zanetti and Dutuit believed the dialect of the inscription to be that of Venice and accordingly attributed the piece to the Venetian school. The words Va inla caneva are probably Emilian instead of, or in addition to, being Venetian. The subject is enigmatic. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Copy of a niello print formerly kept in the Durazzo collection (n. 2854), now in Berlin, Staatliche Museen. On the scrolls, clockwise from the left, in reverse: REGNABO, REGNA, REGNATEM. This fine, delicately engraved work is characteristic of niello prints in its diminutive size, its circular shape, and its inscription in reverse, but uncharacteristic in its white, unshaded background. Technically, it appears to date from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. The subject was common throughout European art from the high middle ages onward and is often accompanied by variants of the inscriptions quoted above, each one associated with a different figure placed at regular intervals around Fortune’s wheel. In this image, the wheel is turned by a rope, attached to a crank in the center and pulled by a hand emerging from the sky at the upper right. The hand appears to emerge from, or pass through, a halo inscribed with a cross. The hand, therefore, must be the hand of God, who determines man’s fate by propelling the Wheel of Fortune. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Bartsch describes these copies in his volume published in 1811, a date that therefore constitutes the terminus ante quem for the execution. For the attribution to Maso Finiguerra, disputed by some scholars, see the summary in Zucker in The Illustrated Bartch,1993. TIB 2401.011; Duchesne, pp. 259-60, n. 312; Zanetti, p. 107, n. 151
Copy of a niello print from the Durazzo Collection. According to Dutuit , the facsimile recorded by Bartsch , Duchesne , and Zanetti does not correspond with any of the paper impressions in the Durazzo sale of 1872. Dutuit speculated that they had seen a facsimile copied from a silver plaque described by Passavant ( vol . 1 , p . 272 , no . 10 ; also Dutuit , p . 46 , no . 187 ) . This oval medallion , measuring 52 x 39 mm , was no . 2827 in the Durazzo sale catalogue . Supposedly , the subject was the Madonna and Child enthroned and flanked by a bishop saint ( with a cross ? ) and another saint ( a cardinal or a monk carrying a book ? ) . Repository unknown . The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Copy of a niello print from the Durazzo Collection, (n. 3009), the original impression of which is now in the Cabinet Rothschild at the Louvre. This is probably late fifteenth- or early sixteenth-century Bolognese, and is close in style to the niello-manner prints of Peregrino da Cesena. The subject and composition are derived, or perhaps directly copied, from an adlocutio scene on a Roman coin. Certain monumental Roman reliefs also offer various points for comparison, such as several of the Antonine reliefs on the Arch of Costantine. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Copy, of a niello print formerly kept in the Durazzo collection (n. 2903), now in Paris, Collection Dutuit, Musée du Petit Palais. The original impression is distinctively marked at the left by a pair of nail or rivet holes in the center of rosette-like ornaments. It is a fine, characteristic example of a Fiorentine craftsmanship of the third quarter of the fifteenth century, and part of the so-called “Finiguerra group” of niello prints. But whether it is by Maso Finiguerra himself or another Fiorentine niellist of the period is uncertain. It may actually be based on a more elaborate design from the Finiguerra (or Pollaiuolo?) circle, The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. Bartsch describes these copies in his volume published in 1811, a date that therefore constitutes the terminus ante quem for the execution. Copy of a niello print from the Durazzo Collection Dutuit noted that, unknown to Bartsch, Duchesne, and Zanetti, the facsimile they recorded was not copied from a paper impression but, rather, from an original silver plaque that belonged to Durazzo (n. 2824), repositary of which is unknown. Ninteenth-century authors described ita s representing a bearded, long-haired king or emperor, wearing a crown and seated in profile with open arms. According to Zanetti and Dutuit, the plauqe was Florentine. The nielli of the Durazzo collection were reproduced in engravings by the owner himself, between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Venice - as also specified by Malaspina in his catalog of 1824 - constituting a series that was circulated and collected by amateurs. 1882Acquaforte, 1882, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Comanducci A. M., Milano, 1962, Vol. II, p. 608). Etching, 1882, signed in plate at lower right. After a subject by Domenico Morelli. Magnificent proof, printed on coeval paper, with wide margins, in excellent condition. On right S. Antonio Abate, full-length; on left a female figure lying and half-covered by light-colored cloth. In the background a shady landscape. The work reflects the second version of Morelli's painting, made in 1879, in which the Saint is depicted in a different position. De Sanctis reveals his adherence to Morelli's formula ("representing figures and things, not actually seen, but imagined and real at the same time") in the deepening, through the engraving technique, of the light-shadow contrast, which highlights the dramatically theatrical tone of the composition (cf. Comanducci A. M., Milano, 1962, Vol. II, p. 608).
1864Acquaforte e rotella, 1864, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. IN basso a destra troviamo l’imprint dell’editore Carlo Lovera di Torino. Dimensioni: 420x305 mm (foglio), 215 mm x 175 mm (ovale). Stampata su carta cina, appllicata su carta coeva. Bibliografia Guido Giubbini, L'acquaforte originale in piemonte e in liguria 1860-1875, 1976, p. 193, n. 8, fig. 110. Etching and wheel, 1864, signed in plate at lower left. At lower right is the imprint of the publisher Carlo Lovera of Turin. Size: 420x305 mm (sheet), 215 mm x 175 mm (oval). Printed on Chinese paper, applied on contemporary paper. This work is taken from the Album Speciale della Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti di Torino. This is the most beautiful of Ferdinando Di Breme's etchings, perhaps the only one in which the artist achieves an effective balance between the precise and minute style of the Lauro tradition and the loose and free style of Fontanesi. Very good condition. Literature Guido Giubbini, L'acquaforte originale in piemonte e in liguria 1860-1875, 1976, p. 193, n. 8, fig. 110.
1789Acquatinta e acquaforte, stampata in seppia, 1789. Dalla serie: A collection of prints, after the sketches and drawings of the late celebrated Giovanni Battista Cipriani pubblicata a Londra da John & Josiah Boydell. Aquatint and etching, printed in sepia ink, 1789. From the series: A collection of prints, after the sketches and drawings of the late celebrated Giovanni Battista Cipriani published in London by John & Josiah Boydell. The series consists of fifty-plate series of facsimile prints of Cipriani's drawings 'engraved by Mr. Richard Earlom' includes seven engraved by Maria Catharina Prestel, Bartolozzi, Kirk and Legat.. A letterpress contents page of the same sheet size, kept under Earlom's name with the majority of the series, gives titles and the series publication date of September 1st, 1789. Richard Earlom (1743-1822) was one of the greatest mezzotint and stipple engravers of his day. He was apprenticed to the London based engraver, G.B. Cipriani and studied at the St Martin's Lane Academy. He won many prizes for his drawings and engravings. In 1774, he began work for John Boydell for whom he created three hundred plates after Claude, published as the Liber Veritas (1777-1819). He also created for Boydell fifty-one plates after Cipriani. Earlom engraved outstanding works both after the designs of his contemporaries and after the old masters. Boydell commissioned his talents for some of the most famous plates in The Houghton Gallery and The Shakespeare Gallery. Giovanni Battista Cipriani, (1727-1785) was a Florentine decorative painter and designer, active mainly in England. In 1755 he was brought to London by the architect Sir William Chambers and the sculptor Joseph Wilton, who had met him in Rome. He was employed in the decoration of many public buildings and private houses and in some cases designed such architectural details as plasterwork, woodwork, and stonecarving. Good examples of his paintings are at Somerset House (where he worked for Chambers) and in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (a series originally executed for Lansdowne House, London). He was also active as a teacher at the Royal Academy (he was a foundation member in 1768 and designed its diploma), and his numerous decorative designs (many engraved by Bartolozzi, his friend since student days) had wide influence. Cipriani's work is accomplished rather than inspired, but he was, in the words of Sir Ellis Waterhouse, 'one of the great backroom figures of the Neoclassic style in England'.
1875Acquaforte, 1875 circa, firmata sotto l'immagine 'Eleuterio Pagliano dip. e inc. Etching, circa 1875, signed beneath the image 'Eleuterio Pagliano dip. and inc. / C. Lovera imp.', followed by the title. Printed on coeval paper, with margins, in excellent condition. A young woman seated on the sidewalk, wearing a bonnet and facing the viewer; her left arm rests on a basket of fruit. After a painting by the same artist. The dating suggested is between the date of exposure of the painting (1871) and the year of publication of the etching on "Arte in Italia". Maria Katharina Prestel (22 July 1747 – 16 March 1794) born Maria Katharina Höll, was an engraver and painter from Nuremberg, and active in London. Prestel, daughter of Maria and Thomas Höll, was born in Nuremberg where she became a pupil of Johann Gottlieb Prestel. She married Prestel in 1769 but the couple separated in 1786, at which point she moved to London with her daughter Ursula Magdalena Prestel. There she worked for John Boydell making aquatints. Her painting Gypsies on a Common was included in the 1905 book Women Painters of the World. Prestel's career in London was quite successful and by the time of her death in 1794, she had produced more than seventy three engraving plates after works by German, Italian, and Dutch artists. She was celebrated for her large aquatint landscape prints, through which she skillfully replicated subtle details of romanticized landscape paintings. Prestel died in Greater London.
