In addition to the message he left for the recipient's guest 'as to Carnegie' he asks him to tell his father-in-law the London parliamentary bookseller P. S. King 'that it will be a very great favour if he sends me to glance over those letters he spoke of'. He undertakes to 'return them at once' and gives his address in Aberdeenshire for August and September. He has 'called twice on the chance of seeing Mrs. Roberts to say Goodbye' and asks the recipient to 'say it for me in kindly fashion'. 2021brossura Sobrietà è un concetto che di primo acchito suona un po' sorpassato. Ad un esame più attento, tuttavia, è ciò che ci augureremmo non di rado come risposta a certi stili di vita, oggi diffusi, che indicano nell'eccesso l'unica fonte della felicità. In ambito spirituale, la sobrietà svolge un ruolo importante da millenni e significa molto di più che avere semplicemente lo stomaco (parzialmente) vuoto. Si tratta, piuttosto, di una condizione nella quale si riesce a guardare le cose dal basso, a riconoscere ciò che è autentico, senza essere distratti dalle proprie o dalle altrui opinioni e intenzioni. In questo libro Mauritius Wilde invita allora a riscoprire la virtù cristiana della sobrietà. Egli prende in esame le diverse sfaccettature di questo concetto antico eppure così attuale e mostra quale significato spirituale e pratico possa avere per noi oggi - al di là dei luoghi comuni. I padri della chiesa raccomandavano una "sobria ebbrezza". Perché la fede conosce entrambe le cose: sia l'estasi sia la rinuncia. Entrambe si trovano nella vita di Gesù, così come nella storia della spiritualità cristiana. La via della sobrietà fa dunque raggiungere una condizione esistenziale che si rivela non grigia, ma piena di brio.

1999brossura È trascorso più di mezzo secolo da quando, nel 1945, questo libro ha visto la luce nella sua prima edizione italiana. Dal 1924 ad oggi l'edizione inglese è stata ristampata per ben ventisette volte. Dopo tanti anni e tante insistenze da parte di numerosi credenti, questo libro, anche se in forma ridotta, è dato alle stampe per la terza volta. Lo stesso desiderio che animava i nostri fratelli del passato è quello che anima noi oggi: raccontare le grandi cose che Dio ha compiuto e compie ancora in favore di quanti Lo invocano con fede e si affidano a Lui pienamente. Il messaggio trasmesso attraverso le pagine di questo umile lavoro è senz'altro attuale. Sarà di stimolo per la fede di quanti si accosteranno alla lettura per essere fortificati spiritualmente dal Signore. I costanti riferimenti alla Parola di Dio saranno certamente di edificazione per il lettore. L'intramontabile annuncio dell'Evangelo esposto nella guida dello Spirito Santo possa incoraggiare tanti a ricercare una "fresca unzione dall'Alto" in questi ultimi tempi della grazia divina.
