First edition, folio (435 x 275 mm), 12pp., engraved portrait frontispiece of Gibbs by Hogarth, one further engraved portrait of Johannes Radcliffe, 21 engraved plates, a very good ex-library copy, frontis., portrait with repairs to corners, water-stain to fore-edge slightly encroaching into image, title a little dusty and creased, with repairs to corners, plates with light damp-stain to outer blank corners, last plate a little more so with a couple of minor closed tears, endpapers renewed, several blind-stamps, later brown buckram, uncut. The Radcliffe Library, better known as the Radcliffe Camera, designed by James Gibbs in neo-classical style and built in 1737-1749 to house the Radcliffe Science Library, has been described as `England's most accomplished domed building and Gibbs's masterpiece' (Pevsner). Gibbs's account of it names the more important craftsmen employed - the masons were Townsend of Oxford and Smith of Warwick, Artari did the plasterwork and Rysbrack the sculpture - and the plates show elevations, sections and interior details. The images in combination with quotes from the photographers evoke ideas that challenge readers' conventional notions of landmarks and at the same time invite readers to consider how they are marked by the communities in which they live. Mumbai formerly Bombay is not only India's commercial center but also its most cosmopolitan city. The photographs capture the many faces of the city from the overcrowded streets where privacy is a luxury to the various activities along its extensive coastline. rif. Ce dernier détail pourrait permettre d’identifier son correspondant.“Blenheim, August 26th 1731Sir,You will easily believe how sorry I am for the occasion I have of troubling you upon so melancholy a subject ; as the unfortunate death of my grand-son [William Godolphin (1700 - 1731)]. Before I left Oxford, my Lord Godolphin was acquainted with it ; and he is in so much affliction, that he has left the direction of what is to be done to me, saying no more than that he thinks it is most proper and natural for the body of my Lord Blandford to be buoy'd privately in Blenheim chappel. And in order to have it so, I will write to the Bishop of Oxford to consecrate it as soon as he can. What my Lord Godolphin has said is very suitable to my own inclinations, having directed in my own will not to have that pageantry of feathers or so much as escutcheons, when I am laid in the same place.I have wit to desire that Sr John Evelyn would come to Oxford. [...] Lord Blandford's chief servant Mr Sparrow is sick and I worry much [...] but I hope from all the goodness which you have shown to me, that you will give yourself the trouble to go to the college and give all the directions that you think reasonable. Which, I am sure, will be an obligation laid upon my Lord Godolphin as well as, Sr.Whenever it is easy to you I should be glad to see you. Your most faithful and most humble servant.S. Marlborough”

1813rif. 129581813. Pena and ink and watercolor on paper. 1 vols. Image size is 6 x 5 inches; including border and thin gilt frame the overall dimemsions are 14 x 9 1/2 inches. Very faint waterstaining to the lower right corner well away from the image the frame's gilt a little rubbed in places else fine. Harding George P. Pena and ink and watercolor on paper. 1 vols. Image size is 6 x 5 inches; including border and thin gilt frame the overall dimemsions are 14 x 9 1/2 inches. A fine watercolor rendering based on Ashmole's Foundation Portrait by John Riley at Oxford's Ashmolean Museum and used as a plate in Ackermann's The History of the University of Oxford 1814. The watercolor follows Riley very closely but there are differences: the subject's hand rests on a shorter book lowering the angle of the arm there is no ring on the left hand there are slight differences in costume and the subject's face appears thinner giving the impression of a younger man. Beneath the image is lettered in black ink "Elias Ashmole Esqr. / Founder of the Ashmolean Museum Oxford." Below this in the large bottom margin is written in pencil "The Original Drawing by Geo. P. Harding executed for Ackermann published in The History of the University of Oxford 2 vols 1814." Elias Ashmole 1617-1692 scholar courtier antiquary heraldric authority and author of The Institution Laws and Ceremonies of the Order of the Garter 1672 inherited through his friendship with John Tradescant keeper of the botanical gardens at Chelsea and his widow a large collection of artifacts and curiosities which he offered to Oxford with the stipulation that the University provide a building to house it which in 1682 it did. This building in Oxford's Broad Street is now the home of The Museum of the History of Science. Thus while he did not form the collection which bears his name it was he who catalogued it brought it to Oxford ensured its survival and set the Ashmolean Museum on the path to becoming the world-class institution it is today.
