1986147 pages including index. Prehistoric dates and more dates have been computed to provide admissibility for the mythic history of Homo sapiens in a framework of recorded mythological events, as well as the arrival of a planetoid which triggered the last Ice Age and the Flood, its hypothetical crash in northeastern Canada that brought forth Halley's comet. Atlantis and Mu are refurbished, and the existence of ancient 'atomic piles' in some pyramids of Egypt proclaimed by the author. In all, a think-piece that challenges the imagination of every reader of this controversial thesis! Includes occasional black and white illustrations. Minor rubbing to top corner of front cover. Best.-Nr. 22783On letterhead of The Western Times Office Exeter. 30 March 185 '. Phelps's entry in the Oxford DNB gives the background to the present letter stating that Phelps 'married Sarah Cooper 1810/11–1867 on 11 August 1826; she was just sixteen. However their marriage was very happy: they were a devoted couple and Sarah later served as Phelps's dresser. Phelps preferred home life with her to clubs or social gatherings. His other delights were angling and shooting and he purportedly knew every trout stream in England. They had three sons and three daughters including William Robert 1828–1867 who became chief justice of St Helena and Edmund d. 1870 who became an actor.' 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. The first three digits of the year are printed in the letterhead and have not been completed. The letter begins: 'My dearest/ I promised to write to-day I believe though I can only tell you that I am well and getting lots of fresh air - Yesterday the boys and I went fishing but found the river flooded - it was showery but still delightful - To-day the weather is better and we think of going off to morrow and trying our luck at Axminster'. With reference to his son William Robert noticed above he writes: 'I took a long walk with Bob this morning and had a long talk with him - he seems perfectly settled - Latimer says he gets on famously - his health is very much better and he looks well'. He asks her to write and tell him 'how the Concert went off last night and what was in the house - Mr Latimer is laying down all kinds of plans for my going to all sorts of places but I think I can come home at the end of the week'. If he finds 'any difficulty in getting away' 'Greenwood' - i.e. Thomas Greenwood the lessee of Sadler's Wells - is to 'send a line to say I am wanted'. He ends by asking her to 'have every thing ready to start off for Farningham as soon as I return - the holidays are short and I must make the most of my time - Kiss the boy all over for me God bless you my darling S. Publisher’s three-quarter red buckram over green gilt lettering & ruling on spine marbled endpapers minor shelfwear dustsoiling to spine still VG copy. First editions of this very scarce and lavishly illustrated educational course on how to design construct and arrange window displays and floor displays of men and women’s clothing during the Jazz Age. Koerber 1871-1937 was an Hungarian-American designer and amazingly successful Display Manager for the Strawbridge & Clothier Department Store in Philadelphia at their five-story edifice flagship at Market & 8th. He emphasized and promoted the use of elaborate window displays with wax mannequins often with a particular theme and these needed to be constantly refreshed by the design department. In addition he highlighted the staging of merchandise on the floor such as putting men’s ties with their multi-coloured silks drawing shoppers to the men’s department and arranging women’s undergarments silks and evening wear in prominent positions to draw women further into specified sections. This work provides technical and practical information on wooden display forms flooring how to construct mannequins draperies holiday themes floor displays how to paint backdrops and more. The hundreds of photo images of window displays and floor displays provide an invaluable historical record for marketing during the Roaring 20s as well as offering a methodology of how these could be repeated and successful for other designers. Of particular interest is the extensive section on animatronics and motorized displays filled with information on lighting automatons and creating special effects. No copies located in Worldcat. 1999Best.-Nr. 26915University Park:: Penn State Press 1999. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Very Good plus dust jacket with light sunning to the spine that is common wtih this title. In Le Tumulte noir Jody Blake focuses on the impacts of African sculpture and African-American music and dance on Parisian popular entertainment and modernist art literature and performance. Blake discusses the reception of ragtime-era and jazz-age entertainment as well as other African visual and performing art forms to provide new ways of understanding the development of modernist primitivism from Matisse and Picasso to Futurism Dada Surrealism and Purism. But the influence of art nÈgre went well beyond the avant-garde art world. Starting with the cakewalk of the 1900s and culminating with the Charleston of the 1920s the book studies the African-American idioms that were involved in larger cultural social and political developments. As an illustration Blake argues that performers such as Josephine Baker and Sidney Bechet of Revue nÈgre fame were thought to affect the political balance between Africa and Europe during the colonial period. Le Tumulte noir is divided into six chronological chapters each a well-researched well-conceived and well-written synthesis of the histories of art literature music and dance.
