rif. 168673 Las Palomas Orinda California. 30 June 1964. 34 lines of typed text on air mail letter on blue paper. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Addressed to Malcom at Paisley Renfrewshire. The letter discusses the fact that he has been 'rushed to death' his gratitude at Malcolm's letter 'Sometimes a writer gets a feeling that he's all alone in a vacuum with nobody listening to what he says.' Malcolm's 'project of a checklist' 'Unfortunately there is so much material - both in and out of the science fiction field - scattered in so many places that I myself lack copies of some things and don't even know what's become of others.' his family background Scandinavian without 'Scottish connections' and Scotland 'Never got any further north in the island than Edinburgh. Ah there was an evening! Anyone who thinks the Scots are a dour race should have been along with us!'. Concludes in the hope that he and his wife Karen 'will make it to London in 1965'. Malcolm's plans for a checklist do not appear to have materialised. 3 Las Palomas, Orinda, California. 30 June 1964. unknown

rif. 24739‘P Place Portland Place London / June 24 1798.’. See his entry in the Oxford DNB and the History of Parliament ‘the foremost diplomat of his age’. It was Malmesbury who went to Brunswick to fetch the Prince Regent’s betrothed Princess Caroline and whom he asked to get him a brandy on his first encounter with her three years before the present letter was written. A legible script was clearly not a prerequisite for a successful diplomat as the handwriting of this missive is scandalously bad: practically on a level with that of Dr Parr. 1p 4to. On recto of the first leaf of a bifolium the verso of the second being franked with partial ‘HENLEY’ postmark and red wax seal ‘Henley June twenty four 1798 / Revd Mr Tawcence / Partridge / near Cranbourn / ’. The franking signature ‘Malmesbury’ appears between two lines in the customary bottom-left corner. Heavily aged and worn with short closed tear to letter and repaired long closed tear across leaf carrying address. The whole of the following transcription is tentative ‘Dear Sir / After consulting with Mr Wilt & with my bailiff they both agree that is not let for Portland sheep & that as plantation that it will be my to keep them from there so much wilder than there it is for that reason that I have to thank you & I beg you to thank your Father for the trouble you have taken in this subject which for for the present at least I have given you uselessly. / I should hope your affair will be settled to yr satisfaction. I am glad yr brother & are so well.’ See Image ‘P Place [Portland Place, London?] / June 24 1798.’ unknown
1977rif. 99587Palm Beach Florida March 7th through March 14th 1977. 1977. Very good. - Three autograph letters signed by Sheilah Graham in 1977 together with a photocopy of the article about her by Wright Tyson with notes penned in ink by Graham on October 21st 1985 also addressed to Jean Dalrymple. In her first letter of March 7th 1977 Sheilah Graham has penned over 70 words on 10 inch high by 8 inch wide buff paper confirming her arrangements to rent Jean Dalrymple's New York City apartment. She informs Jean that she'll be arriving on "Monday March 28" and staying for a month & a half". "I look forward to coming & to seeing you" Signed "Love Sheilah". The letter is folded for mailing else fine. The letter is accompanied by a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's typed reply offering to cook dinner for Sheilah and correcting the address "except that my address is 150 West 55th Street not 130 . as I'm sure you well know! My office is 130 West 56th Street as on this letterhead! Often confuses people!" Sheilah Graham's second letter consists of over 116 words penned on both sides of 9 inch high by 6 inch wide buff paper. She mentions including her check for $500 for one month "It's an answer to my prayer." She'll be in New York on the 14th though moving in on the 28th and as she's working on a new book asks if Jean could call "Plaza Typewriter" and have them deliver an "IBM Standard Electric not the ball keys" to her apartment. Signed "Love Sheilah". In her third letter dated March 14th Sheilah Graham pens over 170 words on both sides of a 10 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of cream paper. The thought of Jean "cooking dinner on the 28th wafts me to Paradise" though she expresses concerns "since my upset tummy landed me in the hospital I'm being very careful". She goes on to state that "I'm coming along well with my new book & I'm going to try to sell it to a network or for a movie." Signed "Love Sheilah". The letter is folded vertically & horizontally for mailing with a couple of short tears to the top & bottom of the folds. Very good. The letter is accompanied by a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's typed reply dated March 17. "I'm so happy I can get your dinner on the 28th. and of course I wouldn't invite anyone else! But if you ever want to have people in. I can do very fine 'catering' for you!!!!" She reassures Sheilah about her diet "I am the original "Regime Minceur" cook. now made famous by the great French chef Bocuse." "By the way I'm sure you remember that we had a fatal fire at my apartment house. The owner is still fixing the house up and we have new doors but the hall still needs some painting. but I'm pretty sure it will be done within the next eleven days so it wll be pretty when you arrive!" There is also a photocopy of Wright Tyson's article on Sheilah Graham from the September 1985 issue of Andy Warhol's "Interview" Magazine illustrated with a portrait of Sheila in Jean Dalrymple's apartment. Graham has penned a lengthy note along the left border of the page dated October 21st 1985. "Dear Jean this was taken at your apartment. The screen was added but if you look closely you will see some of your things on the table! Love Sheilah". The British-born American gossip columnist Sheilah Graham born Lily Shiel 1904-1988 was a nationally syndicated gossip columnist during Hollywood's Golden Age. Her career spanned nearly four decades. She was involved in a relationship with F. Scott Fitzgerald in the latter years of his life which she immortalized in her autobiographical book "Beloved Infidel". The book became a best seller and was subsequently made into a movie starring Deborah Kerr and Gregory Peck. The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. Palm Beach, Florida, March 7th through March 14th, 1977.

rif. 22783On letterhead of The Western Times Office Exeter. 30 March 185 '. Phelps's entry in the Oxford DNB gives the background to the present letter stating that Phelps 'married Sarah Cooper 1810/11–1867 on 11 August 1826; she was just sixteen. However their marriage was very happy: they were a devoted couple and Sarah later served as Phelps's dresser. Phelps preferred home life with her to clubs or social gatherings. His other delights were angling and shooting and he purportedly knew every trout stream in England. They had three sons and three daughters including William Robert 1828–1867 who became chief justice of St Helena and Edmund d. 1870 who became an actor.' 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. The first three digits of the year are printed in the letterhead and have not been completed. The letter begins: 'My dearest/ I promised to write to-day I believe though I can only tell you that I am well and getting lots of fresh air - Yesterday the boys and I went fishing but found the river flooded - it was showery but still delightful - To-day the weather is better and we think of going off to morrow and trying our luck at Axminster'. With reference to his son William Robert noticed above he writes: 'I took a long walk with Bob this morning and had a long talk with him - he seems perfectly settled - Latimer says he gets on famously - his health is very much better and he looks well'. He asks her to write and tell him 'how the Concert went off last night and what was in the house - Mr Latimer is laying down all kinds of plans for my going to all sorts of places but I think I can come home at the end of the week'. If he finds 'any difficulty in getting away' 'Greenwood' - i.e. Thomas Greenwood the lessee of Sadler's Wells - is to 'send a line to say I am wanted'. He ends by asking her to 'have every thing ready to start off for Farningham as soon as I return - the holidays are short and I must make the most of my time - Kiss the boy all over for me God bless you my darling S. P.' On letterhead of The Western Times Office, Exeter. 30 March 185[ ]'. unknown
