Best.-Nr. 120563London, H. Hughes 1866, 220x145mm, III - 182pages, editor's binding. Excellent original publisher’s binding. Full green percaline with sharp cold-stamped decorations on both covers. The spine is blank as issued. The gilt work on the top cover - featuring the author, title, publisher, and a distinctive diagram of a spherical projection - remains bright and crisp. Very slight foxing, which is more pronounced on the endpapers only. The presence of only very slight foxing, which is more pronounced strictly on the endpapers, is exceptional for a technical manual intended for practical use at sea. A highly collectible, fine copy of a scarce Victorian maritime manual. This second edition is a comprehensive guide containing practical examples and formulae for all maritime problems. It features detailed astronomical definitions illustrated by spherical and plane diagrams. Designed specifically for young navigators, it was structured to enable students to master the science of navigation independently. Registered and entered at Stationer’s Hall.
Best.-Nr. Q2426Hardcover. Fair. Blue cloth binder 13 x 10 inches; 3 1-52pp 43 blank. With an extra draft of her "Bulletin Board" essay is laid in. Undated ca. 1930s based on ads for Ireene Wicker "Kellogg's Singing Lady" the first radio network program directed at children active ca. 1932-1936. Very Good with chipping to the mounted cover illustration heavy mottling to rear board and 3" area of glue residue. Textblock with typical toning but generally Very Good and suitable for handling. Visual aids are grouped into the categories of Objects Specimens and Models; Still Pictures; Moving Pictures; Dramatization; Graphic Material; and Radio. She includes repurposed imagery like the color pictures suggested for the blackboard; and student-generated work like the cutout poster and chart. Standout examples include two handmade "vegetable puppets" with articulated limbs and a page with mounted envelopes of crop samples. Titled using cut-out letters a nice example of the style and methods depicted in period teaching and classroom guides. The binder was compiled by Helen Woerner 1898-1983 a long time teacher in of Sharpsburg Pa. a heavily industrialized riverside borough in Pittsburgh. It appears to be making an argument for visual aids and hands-on work proposing a field trip for her class and finding ways to teach her urban students without first-hand farm experience. 6 original photos one showing a horse & buggy are included to make her argument. hardcover

1975373 pages. Signed by author upon half-title page beneath this inscription - With my very best wishes. Index. Black and white photographic plates. "Dr. Cosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early service to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, as well as to the international medical scene." - from dust jacket. Light wear to unmarke book. Average wear to dust jacket now preserved in glossy new archival-grade Brodart cover. A sound copy. Book
