"No author of the revolutionary decade understood this logic better than Jean-Baptiste Leclerc. He shared the view that music possessed the power to make all minds one in the nation - it produced 'simultaneous and unanimous affections among the masses – he wrotes'" (cf. longue analyse in James H. Johnson, 'Listening in Paris. A Cultural History', U. of California Press, 1995, p. 136 et passim).
