Joints and corners a little worn but the binding otherwise in excellent condition; just a hint of browning along a couple edges but A REMARKABLY BRIGHT FRESH AND CLEAN COPY INTERNALLY. This is a collection of passionate love letters purportedly written by a Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado to her French lover Noël Bouton de Chamilly. First published in 1669 the letters express profound longing heartbreak and emotional intensity. Although the work originally included just five letters the racy content raised quite a sensation and the book proved so popular that it went through several expanded editions that included newly "discovered" missives. The present edition includes a total of 12 epistles by our nun and 11 responses from her lover as well as another series of "tender and passionate" love letters between a couple referred to only as "la présidente F. à M. Le baron de B." Though the original work is now widely believed to be a piece of fiction written by the supposed translator French diplomat Gabriel Joseph de Lavergne viscomte de Guilleragues 1628-84 it is still considered to be a very important epistolary novel providing insight into the emotional landscape of the time and influencing numerous adaptations and imitations in literature. Some importance of the work can be seen in the fact that copies of the first edition consistently bring substantial prices at auction more than $25000 three times since 2010. The early ownership inscription on the pastedown belongs to Martin Bowes 1670-1726 a barrister and fellow of the Royal Society. Abraham de Hondt & Jacob van Ellinkhuysen unknown books

1830réf. 004268original manuscript. PEACOCK Thomas Love 1785-1866. Autograph manuscript fragment comparing Gottfried Hermann and Felicite de Lamennais. Undated. Single sheet folded to form four pages 115 x 180 mm written in ink on the first and third pages only. Unsigned with deletions interlinear additions and numbered marginal instructions reordering part of the text. A collector's attribution "Autograph of Thomas Love Peacock." appears above the opening paragraph in another hand with a red "C" in the upper left corner. Light toning and occasional spotting with minor handling wear; otherwise in very good condition. A prose manuscript by the novelist poet and friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley comparing the German classical scholar Gottfried Hermann 1772-1848 with the French religious and political thinker Felicite de Lamennais 1782-1854. Peacock identifies their shared love of truth industry perseverance enduring friendships and indifference to titles and honours. Hermann he observes would remain simply "Godofredus Hermannus" regardless of the academic distinctions available to him. Lamennais likewise refused to subordinate the interests of the people to those of "Kings and Priests" despite the advancement such compliance might have secured within the Catholic Church. Their circumstances provide a stark contrast: Hermann enjoyed a comparatively happy scholarly life while Lamennais endured "one prolonged struggle with private misfortune and political oppression". Peacock praises the conviction and "inflexible moral courage" that sustained Lamennais despite his frail constitution and failing health. Peacock referred to Gottfried Hermann as 'The Great Hermann' in his works Crotchett Castle in 1831. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1830. original manuscript paperback

1846Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Chipped on margins. Some owner notes. Otherwise a good copy. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 18 cm). In Ottoman script. 32 p. This rare book includes the royal travel of Sultan Abdülmecid in 1262 AH [1846 AD] to Roumelia. From Edirne, Abdülmecid proceeded to Eski Zagra (Stara Zagora), Kizanlik (Kazanluk), Gabrova (Gabrovo), Tirnova (Turnovo), Rusçuk (Ruse), Silistre (Silistra), and Varna. The route of the 1846 tour followed closely, except in reverse order, Mahmud II's tour of 1837. According to witness accounts, along the way, the sultan was greeted everywhere with poetic recitations and songs of praise and prayer, both in Ottoman and Bulgarian. The pride of place among welcoming parties invariably fell on students, of all creeds, most clad in white uniforms, some in solemn church-going attire, with flowers and green branches in their hands. At every stop, ceremonial cannon salvos were fired during the day and elaborate firework illuminations were performed at night. In the town of Kizanlik, known then as now for the most fragrant roses and the best rose oil, the sultan's visit coincided, possibly by design, with the rose harvesting season. So the locals sprinkled rose water and poured rose oil before the sultan's cavalcade. According to Hristo Stambolski, in the three days of the sultan's stay in town, no rose harvesting was done so that the whole area would be exquisitely scented in his honor. For his part, the sultan had doctors vaccinate all children against smallpox in public before sending each one off with a small gift of money. Even people with rare diseases were, on occasion, summoned to the sultan's presence so his doctors could cure them. The sublime visit caused the locals, who were unaccustomed to direct contact with the center of power, quite a stir. The most detailed account, albeit from a hostile source, relates the sultan's visit to Rusçuk, which, at four days, may have also been the longest. According to Nayden Gerov, the greeting ceremonies proceeded on a communal basis, with the Jews being placed closest to the town walls, next to them the Armenians, then the Bulgarians, and finally, the Muslims, situated the farthest from town, yet being the first to see and welcome the sultan. As the sultan approached, each group of youngsters would in turn sing for him, everyone else bowing profusely. Based on Gerov's description, it seems that Abdülmecid was dressed in a slightly more luxurious fashion than during state ceremonies in Istanbul. ((Source: Sultan Abdülmecid's Tour of Rumelia and the Trope of Love by Stephanov). The sultan began to travel by the way of the gate of Yedikule in Istanbul in May 6, 1846. He followed the way of Ayastefanos, Silivri, Çorlu, Burgaz, Edirne, Zagra-i Atik, Kizanli, Trnova, Rusçuk, Silistre, Rusçuk, Shumnu, and Varna and came back to Istanbul by way of the sea on June 14, 1846. During this travel, the Sultan listened to people's problems and ordered the authorities to be solved with those problems. He received successful military and administrative authorities in settlements on the way of travel and rewarded them. He also received the governors of Serbia, Eflak and Bogdan, and the representatives of foreign states. With this travel, the Sultan aimed to strengthen the connection to the center of people and administrators in provinces. Özege 17910. First Edition.

1810réf. PEA-1810-4611810. 1st. SHORT DESCRIPTION Year: 1810Edition: First EditionPublisher: T. Hookham Jun. and E. T. Hookham London; Manners and Miller Edinburgh DESCRIPTION Peacock Thomas Love. The Genius of the Thames: A Lyrical Poem in Two Parts. London: Printed for T. Hookham Jun. and E. T. Hookham No. 15 Old Bond Street; and Manners and Miller Edinburgh 1810. First edition. nFirst edition of one of Thomas Love Peacock's earliest literary works published while the author was still only twenty-four years old and before the novels and satires for which he would become celebrated. nA particularly appealing copy preserved in plain early boards with printed paper spine label and untrimmed edges retaining the understated physical appearance of an early nineteenth-century book rather than having been subsequently rebound for a collector's library. nThe text opens with the Proœmium followed by Peacock's lyrical celebration of the Thames in two parts drawing upon classical mythology landscape history and the literary associations of the river. nThe boards are rubbed marked and worn with wear to the extremities and spine and deterioration to the paper label. The text block remains notably attractive with broad margins and untrimmed edges. nIn plain early boards with surviving printed paper spine label. Boards rubbed stained and marked with general surface wear and wear to corners and extremities. Spine worn and label considerably rubbed. Some separation/wear visible around the board and spine edges. nInternally substantially cleaner and more attractive than the exterior might suggest. Pages retain broad margins and untrimmed/deckled edges with occasional spotting marks and minor age-related blemishes. Small marginal defect visible to one photographed leaf not affecting text. nAn appealing copy in an unsophisticated early binding retaining considerable original character. STORY Before Thomas Love Peacock became the celebrated satirist behind Nightmare Abbey and before his friendship with Percy Bysshe Shelley there was the Thames. In 1809 the young Peacock undertook a journey along the river travelling through the landscape that would inspire The Genius of the Thames. The resulting poem appeared the following year in 1810 making this one of the works of Peacock's formative literary period. Peacock transforms the Thames into something more than a geographical feature. Classical gods and spirits mingle with English landscape and history presenting the river as a living thread running through the nation's cultural imagination. The book is particularly interesting when viewed against Peacock's later career. His friendship with Shelley his celebrated satirical novels and his mature reputation all still lay ahead. Here we encounter Peacock before Peacock became famous — a young writer experimenting with poetry landscape mythology and history. This particular copy adds another dimension. Unlike copies subsequently dressed in elaborate leather bindings it survives in remarkably modest early boards its pages retaining their irregular untrimmed edges. It therefore gives the modern collector something close to the physical experience of an early nineteenth-century book as originally circulated. WHY THIS MATTERS This is a first edition of an early Thomas Love Peacock work published in 1810 and preserved in an unusually evocative early state. The principal attraction of this copy is not provenance — unlike the other ARB copy — but originality. Its plain boards surviving paper spine label and untrimmed text block retain considerably more evidence of the way books were originally produced and sold in the early nineteenth century. For collectors of Romantic literature Peacock is particularly interesting because of his close relationship with Percy Bysshe Shelley while The Genius of the Thames predates that friendship and provides a window into Peacock's development before his better-known satirical fiction. It also creates an interesting opportunity within the ARB collection: two copies of the same 1810 first edition each desirable for entirely different reasons — one for its exceptional Peacock-family association and decorative binding; this copy for its comparatively untouched early physical state. hardcover
