1845Best.-Nr. 008561Wiley and Putnam 1845. Hardcover. Good. Very light foxing. Half leather with wear at edges heel and head. A good plus copy. First of this edition. Copy of William Henry Sedley Smith 1806-1872 with his pencil signature on free front endpaper. Bound with the first American editions of Thomas Love Peacocks works:"Headlong Hall" was Peacock's first novel originally published in England in 1815. Set at a Welsh country manor it is peopled by a set of characters each embodying a particular intellectual obsession and is replete with comic and satirical elements. "Nightmare Abbey" originally published in England in 1818 was Peacock's most famous and enduring work filled with gothic motifs like shadowy manor houses with secret rooms and sliding panels. In point of fact the book is a series of satirical romances poking fun at some the major figures of the Romantic Movement; Byron appears as Mr. Cypress Coleridge Mr. Floskey and Shelley Scythrop Glowry. Smith was an actor and stage manager who first appeared in the United States at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia in 1827. During his later years he was both actor and stage manager at the California Theatre in San Francisco. Wiley and Putnam hardcover

2016Best.-Nr. OY-4MG2-GSXE2016 RefineCatch hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. Inspired by his deep love of his county's history and using sources previously untapped by textile historians Dr Amor explains the growth of Suffolk's woollen cloth industry in the late Middle Ages. For a short period the hundreds of Babergh and Cosford in the south of the county were among the most intensively industrialised regions in all Europe. The great churches at Hadleigh Lavenham and Long Melford bear witness to the wealth created. But cloth was also made in many other parts of Suffolk. After a brief introduction this volume begins with a nationwide survey of English cloth-making in the Middle Ages and an exploration of the reasons - physical geography; economy and technology; and society - for its fluctuating fortunes. Subsequent chapters focus on Suffolk. They consider the wool trade and the role of woolmen; the various stages of cloth production and finishing; and the rise of the clothier in the second half of the fifteenth century. This is history from the bottom up told through the lives of men and women who made the cloth - card-makers spinsters weavers fullers dyers shearmen and clothiers.
