1928rif. 177453Newtown Montgomeryshire: The Gregynog Press 1928. First Gregynog edition number 200 of 250 copies of this historical romance based on Welsh folklore first published in 1828. Founded in 1922 by sisters Margaret and Gwendoline Davies the Gregynog Press was one of the leading fine presses of the first half of the 20th century and predominantly focused on Welsh material. Bayntun Rivière and the Gregynog Press were connected through George Fisher 1879-1970 the latter's binder from 1924. Fisher completed his apprenticeship at Rivière's and studied under Douglas Cockerell. It was at Fisher's suggestion that a number of copies of every Gregynog edition were bound in more luxurious covers. Following Gwendoline's death in 1954 Margaret donated most of the machinery to the National Library of Wales. The University of Wales reopened the press under the name "Gwasg Gregynog" in 1978. Large octavo 153 x 231 mm. Numerous wood-engravings within text by Horace Walter Bray. Contemporary blue crushed morocco by Bayntun Rivière spine lettered and ruled in gilt in compartments raised bands dotted in gilt covers framed board edges dotted and wide turn-ins decorated with wave-roll and scrollwork cornerpieces in gilt marbled endpapers top edge gilt fore edge uncut. Twentieth-century armorial bookplate of one Richard Campbell perhaps of the Campbell's of Kildalloig and later Carmarthenshire to front free endpaper verso. Spine and board edges toned a handful of marks to covers contents clean: a near-fine copy. hardcover

1838rif. AMO-3063aris, Charpentier, Libraire-éditeur, 1838. [Imprimerie d'Ad.
1751rif. AQ34346London: Printed for J. Robinson 1751. 4 278 273-287pp 1. Complete despite erratic pagination. Modern gilt-tooled green morocco contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Short tear to leaf U4 very occasional light spotting. An enlarged edition printed in the year after the first of a curious collection of comic advertisements found in coffee houses Vauxhall gardens and London theatres. The extracts - though primarily eccentric often outlandish and somewhat perverse pleas for some unorthodox service or amorous encounter - include the occasional theatrical notice notably a printed barb directed by David Garrick towards fellow player James Quinn; and in an infrequent foray into sporting life an amusing advertisement placed by a presumably male lovestruck spectator at a cricket match: 'Whereas on Monday last at the Cricket Match in the Artillery Ground was observ'd a young Woman dress'd in a blue and white washing gown a black petticoat and a black Beaver Hat with an Orange Ribbon round it.If the said young Woman will be pleased to describe a Place Where she may de directed or be spoken with may hear of honourable Proposals'. A third and final edition appeared in 1759. All editions are scarce the second is no exception; ESTC records copies at just two locations in the British Isles Cambridge and Oxford and two further in North America Harvard and Washington. ESTC N3048. Second edition with additions. 12mo. Printed for J. Robinson unknown

1967rif. 191651967. Columbia Pictures Corporation To Sir With Love 1967 documents the emergence of Sidney Poitier as a central figure in global Black cinema and the articulation of race authority and education within a transatlantic context during the Civil Rights era. The film places a Black teacher in a working-class London classroom foregrounding questions of discipline respectability and interracial social dynamics. These lobby cards provide visual evidence of how Poitier's screen persona functioned within narratives of moral authority and social mobility supporting research into African American film history postwar race relations and the international circulation of Black cultural figures. Archive of 11 original lobby cards issued by Columbia Pictures Corporation measuring between approximately 10 x 7.5 inches 10 x 8 inches and 14 x 11 inches comprising four color and seven black and white photographic stills. Each card features Sidney Poitier in staged scenes from the film including classroom interactions moments of confrontation and instruction and scenes of social engagement with students and colleagues. Notable images include Poitier receiving guidance from a fellow instructor on classroom management interacting with the school headmaster and participating in both boxing and dance sequences reflecting the narrative's blending of discipline and personal connection. Co-star Pamela Dare appears in select images emphasizing interpersonal dynamics central to the film's storyline. Several cards bear verso markings including 1960s distribution stamps and one example with a CBS Studios pastedown referencing a 1972 television broadcast indicating continued circulation beyond the initial theatrical release. Produced at a moment when Sidney Poitier had already become the first African American actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor the film and its promotional materials contributed to shaping his public image as a figure of dignity restraint and institutional authority. To Sir With Love extended this image into an international setting situating issues of race and class within the British educational system while maintaining resonance with American audiences during a period of civil rights struggle and social change. The lobby cards offer insight into how Black masculinity and leadership were visually constructed and marketed in late 1960s cinema. Minor edge wear and light handling marks with occasional verso stamps and pastedown; images remain sharp and colors well-preserved; overall very good. A cohesive visual archive of Sidney Poitier's role in redefining Black representation in mainstream film. unknown
