1940Best.-Nr. 239431940. Female companionship and sapphic love photo archive circa 1940s to 1960s documenting affectionate and physically intimate relationships among women during decades when lesbian life in the United States was subject to public hostility legal prosecution and discrimination in employment and public accommodations. The identities and relationships of the women are unrecorded and the photographs do not establish how their subjects understood or named themselves but repeated embraces paired portraits shared beds physical closeness and relaxed domestic and recreational scenes place the group within the visual history of sapphic intimacy and female social life. Its chronology overlaps the Lavender Scare which culminated in President Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1953 Executive Order 10450 and the exclusion of gay men and lesbians from federal employment as well as the emergence of the Daughters of Bilitis in San Francisco in 1955 initially organized as a private lesbian social club and alternative to a frequently raided bar scene. Photo archive of 19 silver gelatin photographs ranging from approximately 1.5 x 1.5 to 3 x 4 inches circa 1940s to 1960s. The photographs consistantly center women in pairs and small groups embracing on park benches reclining against one another outdoors sitting shoulder to shoulder in the grass posing in bathing suits gathering at picnics and swimming areas and relaxing in bedrooms and other private interiors. Several images are unusually intimate for ordinary mid century snapshot photography: two women lie closely entwined beneath a blanket in bed; another pair sit pressed together while smoking cigarettes; women embrace around the waist and shoulders in wooded settings; and one photograph shows two women reclining together on the ground one positioned over the other with her arm around her companion. Elsewhere women pose beside automobiles sit on beds in bathing suits clown for the camera in a bedroom and appear in groups at beaches and outdoor gatherings. Clothing hairstyles photographic papers and changing print formats trace the group across several postwar decades while the recurrence of leisure touch and paired portraiture makes female relationships rather than family ceremony work or public events the archive's principal subject. The photographs belong to a period in which much lesbian social life remained dependent upon private networks even as an organized homophile movement began to emerge publicly. The Daughters of Bilitis founded in 1955 by four lesbian couples began as a private social organization before developing into the first lesbian rights organization in the United States; its magazine The Ladder launched in 1956 and became the first nationally distributed periodical produced for lesbians. Such organization developed amid sustained legal and institutional pressure: beginning in the late 1940s the federal government intensified efforts to remove homosexual employees while police and licensing authorities subjected gay and lesbian gathering places to surveillance and raids. Against that history vernacular photographs of women occupying bedrooms parks swimming areas automobiles and domestic interiors preserve a different register of mid century queer experience one grounded in affection recreation friendship bodily ease and the private circulation of personal images rather than public activism. Light to moderate surface and edge wear occasional creasing and minor staining with some photographs lightly faded or toned. Overall in good condition. A concentrated visual record of female intimacy and joy across the 1940s through 1960s preserving forms of companionship and affection that often left little documentation in the public record. unknown books

1959Best.-Nr. 222201959. Demetre Margaret. Unchained Desire 1959 examines interracial romance and female sexuality through the conventions of mid-century American pulp fiction supporting research into the cultural representation of race gender and taboo relationships on the eve of the Civil Rights Movement. Published when interracial intimacy remained legally prohibited or socially condemned across much of the United States the novel belongs to a broader body of popular fiction that explored subjects largely excluded from mainstream publishing. Its narrative offers insight into how commercial fiction engaged contemporary anxieties surrounding racial identity women's autonomy and social boundaries. Demetre Margaret. Unchained Desire. New York: Comet Press Books 1959. First edition. 188 pages. Original cloth binding in illustrated red and cream dust jacket. The novel follows the daughter of a Cuban aristocratic family whose Black ancestry places her relationship with a wealthy white man from a racially prejudiced family at the center of the narrative. Drawing upon themes of forbidden love social hierarchy and inherited prejudice the story develops through conflicts over race family expectations and female agency rather than conventional domestic romance. Issued under Comet Press's "Milestone Book" imprint the volume reflects the publisher's emphasis on adult popular fiction addressing subjects considered controversial in postwar American culture. Appearing only a few years before the major legislative victories of the Civil Rights Movement Unchained Desire illustrates how popular fiction negotiated questions of interracial relationships before such themes became more visible in mainstream literature. Margaret Demetre born in Savannah Georgia to a Greek immigrant family wrote against the backdrop of a segregated Southern society whose racial divisions informed much contemporary popular fiction though direct connections between her biography and the novel's themes remain undocumented. Binding sound; pages clean; dust jacket with moderate edge wear creasing several small closed tears and old penciled pricing on the front panel; overall very good condition. An uncommon example of late-1950s pulp fiction documenting the intersection of race gender and popular literary culture during a pivotal period in American social history. unknown books

One of the pioneering publications of its kind it was the very first collection of legal precedents to be referred to regularly as "Reports." It remained a work of immense authority second only to the Year Books and went through six editions in Law-French the last appearing in 1688. The extensive annotations in this copy written primarily in a single precise seventeenth-century hand consist of case citations references to contemporary reporters and brief analytical glosses.
