Numerous tip-ins of supposed originals = handwritten notes, telegrams, letters, envelopes, drawings, a flower, a hair pin, and newspaper clippings, etc. All of these documenting the course of a Victorian romance between a discreet young woman and a discreet young man. There is a brief introduction, but the rest of the tale is told solely in these artifacts dropped from Cupid's diary. William Hepworth Dixon (1821-1879) was an English historian, journalist, and traveller. "Spiritual Wives" grew out of his trip to the U.S., and much of its content is about Mormonism and polygamy; but he includes interesting first hand observations on Robert Owen's community, and other places in the U.S. where Free Love, Communalism, and Socialism are practiced. At the end of the book appears an essay in German on Pietism. Quite a remakable book. L19
