1897rif. 1197London: Macmillan and Co. Limited 1897. Very Good. Octavo. Illustrated by F. H. Townsend. Introduction by George Saintsbury. Original publisher's blue cloth elaborately stamped in gilt with a striking Art Nouveau peacock design to the upper board and spine. Decorative binding associated with Albert Angus Turbayne. Gilt generally bright with localized rubbing and abrasion to the upper board. Spine ends worn and lightly frayed with minor cloth loss at head. Moderate edge and corner wear. Interior age-toned. Illustrated frontispiece with tissue guard present. An attractive illustrated edition of two of Thomas Love Peacock's works particularly desirable for its elaborate publisher's peacock binding. Townsend's illustrations and Saintsbury's introduction accompany two examples of Peacock's distinctive satirical and imaginative fiction. A visually compelling example of late-Victorian decorative book design. Macmillan and Co., Limited unknown

1928rif. 24696Newton Montgomeryshire: The Gregynog Press 1928. Limited edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 8vo. 41191. Purple buckram spine gilt; blue patterned cloth boards. Finely printed on hand-made Matchelor paper. Illustrated with wood engravings by Horace Walter Bray. Onky a trace of rubbing to the binding; the spine is unfaded; a near fine copy. In theory one of 250 numbered copies but in reality this is possibly a unique copy: the limitation number has been neatly excised and the publisher has added in ink "for exhibition purposes only." Gregynog exhibition copies were intended to to showcase the press's craftmanship. The "Misfortunes of Elphin" were composed after ancient Welsh material including the Boddi Maes Gwyddno' the Hanes 'Taliesin' and the 'Mabinogion'. As can be expected King Arthur figures prominently in the story. We even have an account of Taliesin recovering the abducted Guinevere. Howey A-1950. Gregynog Bibliography No. 12. .
