Washington D.C.: The National Coalition of Hispanic Mental Health and Human Services Organizations 1978. First edition. Perfect-bound in original cream-colored wrappers printed in brown with illustrations depicting Latino family life. 1919ref. 189681919. Survey of Relief to Widows and Children Presented to Parliament by Command of His Majesty. Ministry of Health. 186 pages. London: His Majesty's Stationary Office 1919. Measures 9.5" x 6." Issued under the rule of George V a champion of welfare reform and social work. A landmark government report on post-World War I welfare policy documenting the scope administration and social implications of public assistance to widows and dependent children in Britain. Issued by the Ministry of Health and presented to Parliament in the immediate aftermath of the war this 186-page survey represents one of the earliest comprehensive attempts to analyze the treatment and conditions of war widows and impoverished families under the Poor Law system and other charitable schemes. The report is presented in dense statistical tables and detailed narrative assessments distinguishing between rural and urban jurisdictions and evaluating the differential treatment of illegitimate children and the moral assumptions underlying state relief. As stated in the Survey's prefatory note the decision to publish a report on the well-being of windows and children arose after a 1914 House of Lords case in which a poor mother was convicted of child cruelty. The woman whose earnings were 10 shillings a week locked her children in a rented room "where they were found in an indescribable state and in a mental condition bordering upon idiocy." The mother said she did not want to seek governmental assistance for fear that her family would be separated. This resulting survey examines the efficacy of Britain's social safety net as well as that of the United States. It contains case studies investigations and inspections. Staplebound in brown wrappers. Some rust and foxing around staples. Front wrap bears royal seal and a stamp. Interesting and in very good condition. unknown books

1843ref. 69152New York: Saxton & Miles No. 205 Broadway 1843. Rare Almanac with a Domestic Bent A scarce American almanac promoting diet reform particularly for women. The first fourteen pages are devoted to the year 1844. Each month includes a calendar with solar and lunar information alongside "various phenomenon" including important dates and anniversaries and maxims. The remainder of the volume has a variety of selections covering topics including health and diet phrenology household economy and marriage. Of particular interest is the section headed "Flesh Eaters" beginning on page 17 a lengthy exploration of the interplay between diet and disease culminating in the guidance that "Fruit is the best adapted for the food of man; next comes the seeds such as wheat corn &c; next comes vegetables as they are termed then follows the lean flesh of the clean animals such as the deer sheep &c." "The Effects of Tight Dress" pp. 37-41 enumerates and illustrates the detrimental effects of constrictive women's fashion as they were understood at the time: "It is necessary to give health to the lungs that the body should be well nourished in order to form good blood; it is also necessary we should breathe pure air and likewise that the lungs should not be encroached on by tight dress in any form." Contrasting illustrations show a figure "as she came from the hand of God" juxtaposed against "a deformed female made so by artificial means." As was common in the popular health movement of the Jacksonian-era breadmaking was utilized to illustrate domestic and moral proficiency and the author notes that: "Men of discernment will take notice that women who have well proportioned bodies make the best bread for they are able to work the dough much more thoroughly without causing an uneasiness about the chest." A publisher's advertisement on the final page identifies the proprietors of Saxton & Miles as Charles M. Saxton and Earl E. Miles "dealers in Books in every department of Literature at very reduced prices for cash." The firm focused on books relating to domestic economy farming and agriculture and was active under this name from 1842 to 1847. Other publications from the press include Gunn's Domestic Medicine and the monthly periodical The American Agriculturist. Slipcase with a small amount of chipping. Overall a crisp clean copy of this seminal work on the technique and importance of pochoir illustration. "Between the World Wars the French took this ordinary craft stencilling and raised it to a high art notably in the livres d'artistes movement. Used for making coloring illustrations the stencil process pochoir in French brought brilliance to illustrated books never seen before and very little since. Stencilling is labor intensive; colors are applied by hand and as with many handcrafts went out of use by the beginning of World War Two. Jean Saudé most influential in the development of pochoir into an art and author of Traite d'Enluminure d'Art au Pochoir Paris 1925 believed that the technique could serve as a hyphen between the artist and the public and proclaimed that pochoir through its dependence on manual application in the reproduction process made possible true art instead of altered reproductions. Saude believed that pochoir was the only process which translated the artist's original intent from the first to the last print because it was done entirely by hand" V. Gerry Stencilling. Saudé specialized in finely illustrated books and collector's pieces but this book is his greatest legacy. It was the only contemporary book on the mechanics of pochoir and remains its finest example. HBS 69144. $3500. Editions de l'Ibis unknown books

An account of the groundbreaking work of the Tuke family and the Society of Friends for improving the care and dignity with which mental illness was treated. At a time when the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness was often inhumane William Tuke stepped forward in 1796 to found The Retreat. Its goal was to create safe pleasing and dignified conditions for those being institutionalized; and from its inauguration The Retreat kept its doors open to public visitors who may want to witness and document the conditions of its campus and patients. In the present work William's grandson Samuel Tuke publicizes the institution's "internal economy of management" as well as its "mild system of treatment." Transparency is key to continued progress Tuke asserts; and he wants the Retreat's successes to assist in further advances in the field. "The interests of humanity and science alike call upon us to communicate freely the discoveries we make or the failures which happen to us.If persons engaged in the management of the insane were more generally to publish the results of their observation we might reasonably hope that the causes of this obscure and affecting disorder would receive some illustration." While William Tuke's work remains revolutionary in improving method of caring for the mentally ill Samuel Tuke's book "helped popularise the approach.to use the moral treatment method for restoring self-esteem and self-control in individuals" suffering from a range of ailments Quaker World. As awareness of the model spread so too did institutions build on its principles with hospitals emerging in the UK and US. W. Alexander unknown books

All items are in fine condition enclosed in an archival box with metal corners. Nature is a British weekly international scientific journal publishing peer-reviewed research across the natural sciences including biology physics chemistry the earth sciences and related interdisciplinary fields. Science is the peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science publishing original scientific research and research reviews. Both journals are regarded as the premier publications of cutting-edge research with an international readership. The Human Genome Project was an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA and of identifying mapping and sequencing all of the genes of the human genome from both a physical and a functional standpoint. It started in 1990 and was completed in 2003. It was the world's largest collaborative biological project. Level "complete genome" was achieved in May 2021 with only 0.3% of the bases covered by potential issues. Funding came from the US government through the Department of Energy and National Institutes of Health as well as numerous other groups from around the world. A parallel project was conducted outside the government by Celera Genomics which was formally launched in 1998. An initial rough draft of the human genome was available in June 2000 and by February 2001 a working draft had been completed and published followed by the final sequencing mapping of the human genome on 14 April 2003. The Human Genome Project through its sequencing of the DNA can help researchers understand diseases including: genotyping of specific viruses to direct appropriate treatment; identification of mutations linked to different forms of cancer; the design of medication and more accurate prediction of their effects; advancement in forensic applied sciences; biofuels and other energy applications; agriculture animal husbandry bioprocessing; risk assessment; bioarcheology anthropology and evolution.
