2019brossura L'autore ci offre una sintesi delle sue osservazioni originali sul tema droga, frutto dell'ascolto dei quasi 50.000 tossicomani che in oltre 40 anni hanno frequentato Villa Maraini. Contrariamente a quanto avviene in tutto il mondo, in cui i centri antidroga offrono la loro terapia, non necessariamente adeguata per quell'individuo in quella fase della sua dipendenza, è convinzione di Massimo Barra che debba essere la terapia a doversi adattare al soggetto e non viceversa. La tossicomania è descritta come una storia d'amore di una persona per una o più sostanze atte a modificarla dando piacere. Il passare del tempo però modifica la storia ed è terapeutico perché la routine è la tomba dell'amore, anche di questo folle amore. È dunque più probabile che decida di smettere un tossicodipendente anziano piuttosto che un giovanissimo in "luna di miele" con la droga. La terapia non si identifica con la disintossicazione, ma è un "lungo cammino" da percorrere insieme. Da ogni concetto traspare la risoluta fede antidroga dell'autore, assieme ad una non celata simpatia per i suoi pazienti e la certezza che non esiste tossicomane, per quanto posseduto dalla droga, che non possa smettere e cambiar vita radicalmente.

Cette très belle évocation des bistrots et de leurs habitué(e)s est rehaussée de 25 gravures en taille-douce par l'artiste suisse Elisabeth-Mary Burgin (1887-1968), dont c'est le seul livre illustré. Excellent exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi de l'artiste à Adrienne Monnier qui l'avait encouragée à ses débuts, en organisant sa première exposition à La Maison des Amis des Livres en 1930. On joint la très rare plaquette éditée lors de l'exposition de dessins et gravures de Burgin à la Galerie Rive Gauche en 1946, avec un texte de Léon-Paul Fargue (8 pages in-8 et 3 reproductions).
