He discusses the preparation and use of infusions tinctures brown powder and beneficial effects in small doses. Despite his opening remarks it seems Dr. Horwitz has considerable experience in the use of opium along and in combination with calomel in connection with numerous ailmetns. unknown

A set of copper & brass scales hand made contained in a two-part wooden case with three elephants carved in the top 16.5 x 7.5 cm. closed with a brass ring scale bowls 4.5 cm. diameter balance bar 11 cm. . . . HAND-MADE . . A lovely period piece entirely hand-made. This charming and unique ethnic piece came from the Golden Triangle area. . The case has a pivot point at the elephant's tail end. It opens by separating the two halves as if a clam-shell. Contained within the box is a matching carved form exactly matching the whole scale and its two brass bowls. . The bowls are tied with four purple dyed strings attached to each end of the copper balance bar. Held in the center by another string the pointer will balance to the exact center done with great & fine precision and accuracy. . One simply puts opium in one side and a counter balance in the other to get an exact weight measurement. . Likely the work of Karens or other Golden triangle tribes. Includes a report list of attendances and minutes of the British Malaya Opium Committee. Material covered inlcudes many aspects of opium use eg origin consumption retail sale of prepared opium by the government registration of users the Chinese community in British Malaya and the anti-opium movement education as the means of eradicating the habit. The section concludes with a 24 point summary by the committee which sat on 23 occasions between November 1923 and February 1924. B. Part II consists of 77 appendices including opium statistics; statistics of consumers of prepared opium of opium shops dross returns and miscellaneous official and unofficial correspondence and memoranda relating to opium consumption. C. Part III deals in detail with the evidence given by witnesses before the committee and lists their names and occupations. Dark blue cloth covered boards lettered in gilt on the spine very lightly marked original blue wrappers bound in. A sound and clean copy of a fascinating and important report. Amongst the most peculiar aspects of British colonial rule of Malaya was the opium trade where in the late 19th and early 20th centuries revenue raised formed a major part of colonial government budgets Bailey & Truong 2001. In the early 1920s revenues derived from the government opium monopoly together with import duties on alcohol and tobacco were the three largest components of the colony's revenues of the Straits Settlement and remained as major sources of revenue until the end of the 1930s. By the beginning of the 20th century the problem of opium addiction in British Malaya particularly among the Chinese community had become a major concern. Under mounting pressure from the Chinese community leaders an Opium Commission was set up in 1907 to investigate the problem and this resulted in the abolition of opium tax farms in 1912 and the subsequent loss of a major source of revenue for the colonial government Turnbull 1989; Sugimoto 2002. In order to address this major loss of revenue the British colonial administration attempted to introduce income tax in the Straits Settlements.' Old folds now mellowed but with a nasty closed tear running down the middle of the sheet for 6.5 inches.Now housed in a removable clear archival sleeve with acid-free backing. Included is a handsomely printed handbill 4 x 6 inches for a 1988 lecture on "Victoria Opium and Empire." by Frank. J. Novak M.D. presented at Stanford University's Fairchild Auditorium. Commodities report from the Schieffelin drug firm including the going rate for opium oil. Jacob Schieffelin and his brother founded their drug company in 1794; in 1813 the firm passed to his sons who renamed the firm H. H Schieffelin located at the intersection of John St. and Cliff St. in Lower Manhattan about two blocks from today's South Street Seaport Museum. That firm dissolved in 1848. Other trade goods listed include agricultural produce soaps lucifer matches various gums sulphur asbestos ginger etc. A fine glimpse into daily American life and global trade. . H. H. Written in a shaky hand. Clearly writing in reference to his 1899 autobiography 'A Sailor's Life under Four Sovereigns' he states that he is glad that Willis is 'pleased with the book' and explains that he was 'suddenly driven' to Cannes 'by neuralgic pains'. He concludes: 'If I live to get back I should like to insert the Authors name in your Copy! Your sincere old friend Harry Keppel'. 7 February [1900]. On letterhead of the Grand Hotel, Cannes. unknown
