1953ref. BIBLIO-58397Oxford University Press first edition 1953. Cloth 8vo. vii 266 pp. 289 entries. Uncommon. The best bibliography of Cobbett with entries extensively annotated to provide more general information on his life and times. With a foreword by G.D.H. Cole. From the blurb: "The occasion of this book was the acquisition by Nuffield College of the very full collection of Cobbett's writings amassed by Professor G. D. H. Cole.It is a combination of bibliography and biography built round a fuller and more complete account of Cobbett's voluminous writings in both England and America than has yet been given. This account containing much new information about the manner and effect of his publications together with a description of other writings and of important manuscript material has been used by the author to give a rounded picture of the life and times of a vivid personality with the aim of providing not only a work of reference for the scholar but also a signpost for the general reader. A somewhat poignant presentation copy inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper to the Liverpool bookseller bibliographer and Cobbett collector Arnold Muirhead To Arnold Muirhead with gratitude for much help. April 7 1953 M.L. Pearl and with Muirhead's booklabel on the front pastedown endpaper. Muirhead had assembled a substantial collection of Cobbett first editions and written an article about these in The Book Collector and hsd given Pearl access to the collection - Pearl acknowledges his special indebtedness to Muirhead for much information in the book. Unfortunately Muirhead felt the published work was misleadingly entitled A Bibliographical rather than Historical Account. and when he was invited at the suggestion of John Carter to review it for the Times Literary Supplement he laid bare at length its bibliographical shortcomings. Pearl and the books sponsor G.D.H. Cole responded in somewhat wounded fashion in letters to the TLS and Muirhead countered maintaining his bibliographical criticisms while conceding that bibliography apart the book is the most interesting and complete record of Cobbetts writings yet published. An article in the Bookseller gave further attention to the agreeable little fracas: For something like three column-feet hands are raised in horror none of it I am sure simulated at the bibliographical crimes Mr Pearl commits. Laid in are 1 the printed TLS slip requesting the review with typescript mention of Carter; 2 clipping of the review; 3 clippings of the letters published from Pearl Cole and Muirhead; 4 page torn from The Bookseller commenting on the exchange and 5 the dustwrapper lacking the rear panel. . Top edge a touch duststained a few pencil side-lines and marks otherwise Good. Oxford University Press, first edition, 1953 hardcover
