1853réf. 16766New York: Stringer & Townsend 1853 First edition. Pamphlet bound in early twentieth century half brown leather over light brown cloth boards. . Twelvemo. Some fading to leather on upper board. Spine rubbed. Top edge gilt. Purple endpapers with bookseller's ticket in right hand corner of lower endpaper. Title-page coming loose at head. Some dampstaining to first dozen or so leaves. Some toning and foxing to leaves. Still a good tight copy of an item that is rare in commerce. Wrappers removed in rebinding. The present work compiles letters first published in the New York Tribune discussing whether divorce should be legal. The epistolary conversation takes place between Henry James Sr. 1811 – 1882 the father of psychologist William James and novelist Henry James; Tribune founder and editor Horace Greeley 1811 – 1872; and Stephen Pearl Andrews 1812 – 1886 an abolitionist and anarchist. Andrews released the present work when Greeley refused to print one of his letters to the Tribune. In the letter Andrews argues in favor of divorce permitting sex outside of marriage and the right of women to freely choose their husbands pp. 71-81. Greeley based his rejection partially on the grounds that Andrews' letter described injustices against women in excessive detail. Stringer & Townsend, hardcover

The Chinese Novel is Buck's Nobel Lecture delivered at the Swedish Academy upon winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. Buck the first of just two American women to win the prize points out the distinct nature of the Chinese novel the quintessential grass-roots form which comes from and lives within the Chinese common people whose tea house and farming villages are the roots of the stories contained therein. She also predicted - correctly - that her own adherence to this form would cause her to fall out of the critical limelight in time. With the slipcase hard to replace. Pearl S. Buck b.1892 - d.1973 was the daughter of American missionaries to China and an author whose 1931 novel 'The Good Earth' won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938 Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China" and for her books 'The Exile: Portrait of an American Mother' and 'Fighting Angel: Portrait of a Soul' memoirs about her mother and father respectively. Buck's life was defined by her advocacy for the people of China and shifting western perceptions about that part of the world. This collection has several items pertaining to her early recognition on the heels of her Pulitzer Prize when a luncheon was held for her in New York at the Hotel Astor in 1932. There she gave her famous speech "Is There a Case for Foreign Missions" At the end the the audience appeared confused and speechless. Initially no one clapped or congratulated her and Buck later recalled after a few painful moments a storm of applause arose but by then her publisher was abruptly escorting her from the room. Inlcuded here is: 'Luncheon in Honor of Pearl S. Buck at the Hotel Astor November 2nd 1932' listing of guests and their table numbers. Pearl S. Buck is listed as Mrs. J. 1919réf. 22594ENew York: George H. Doran 1919. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author / actress Pearl White on the half-title: “To ‘Nils’ Just me as I really am Pearl”. Front hinge split and starting to the interior with overall handling edge wear dust soiling to the cloth and some spotting without dust jacket. The memoirs of Pearl Fay White 1889 – 1938 who rose to popularity as an actress on the stage screen given the nickname the ‘Queen of the Serials’ most notably as the spirited ingenue / heroine in The Perils of Pauline which catapulted her into international stardom. Some of her other notable films include The Exploits of Elaine The House of Hate and The Lightning Raider. Sadly Ms. White was unable to find success in feature films and retired from acting in 1923. She was married twice - first to actor Victor Sutherland 1907 - 1914 then to actor Wallace McCutcheon 1919 - 1921. Pearl White's place in film history is important in both the evolution of cinema genres and the role of women in the film industry and she has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Tragically many of her films are officially considered to be lost. The 1947 film The Perils of Pauline is a fictionalized biography of Pearl White starring Betty Hutton as White with John Lund Billy De Wolfe William Demarest and Constance Collier. George H.
