1931rif. 018803New York: The John Day Company 1931. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 375pp. Solid True First Printing of the First Edition with "flees" on p.100 line 17. Brown top-stain. Buck's landmark winner of the 1932 Pulitzer Prize. Bound in brown cloth with lettering and decoration in gilt. Green illustrated end-papers. Square and clean with maybe just a hint of page toning but no foxing writing or any other markings. Some spotting to cloth and spine gilt dulled as is the top-stain. Spine cloth creased and loosened from text-block in spots. Mild edge-wear. Very attractive unclipped later-issue dust-jacket $2.50 Pulitzer winner notice has some chipping to spine ends toned spine and edges and some wear to edges and tips. Still bright complete and presents well. Pasted onto the verso of the front end-paper is a form note signed by Buck addressing booksellers and offering her thanks for their efforts while introducing a new work her 1954 semi-autobiographical "My Several Worlds". It seems clear that this was a piece of ephemera for review copies of that later work and the previous owner has simply pasted it into this copy of "The Good Earth". The note is in very good condition with some spotting. Not perfect but a presentable and collectable copy with a fairly uncommon signature and at a great price. The John Day Company hardcover

Uber-scarce in the trade there being no copies currently available on-line of the three publications that augment the show that was held at the Marilyn Pearl Gallery New York "Paintings Paperworks Construction March 6 - March 31 1984" and that comes with the extra suite of hand-made papers being Copy No. 6 of only 25 copies produced and that is housed in a custom-made clamshell box. The box contains an oblong format glossy-wraps exhibit catalog 24 pp. in length and with a full list of the pieces displayed and a Foreword penned by Robert J. Koenig Director of the Gallery. "Clinton Hill Recent Work" is a tall trade softcover format catalog that is augmented with an essay by Stephen Westfall and with another 16 pp. of to-then recent works rendered in full glorious color. A second trade softcover glossy-covers item has been laid in and in another 16 pp. has presented his C.V. Grants and Awards books and articles etc. Each of those items is housed in the heavy cloth clamshell box that is in As New condition. Finally there is a suite of handmade paper in association with John Koller from his mill at Woodstock Connecticut in December of 1976 in an edition of only 25 copies. Fully collectible examples of lovely handmade paper. The clamshell box is stamped/embossed in silver on the front cover with Clinton Hill's name.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
