réf. 8374Bailey Pearl. Signed card preserves the autograph of an African American actress singer author and entertainer whose career extended across Black vaudeville nightclubs Broadway film recording and television. Bailey's starring performance in the all-Black production of Hello Dolly! brought her major Broadway recognition while her later public service included work as a goodwill representative and participation in presidential and United Nations initiatives. Her signature supports research into Black women's performance history celebrity culture and the public identities cultivated by prominent African American entertainers during the twentieth century. Signed card undated. 5 x 8 inches. Inscribed boldly in black ink "Love Pearl Bailey." The concise inscription conveys the affectionate and informal manner associated with Bailey's public persona distinguishing the piece from a legal or professional document bearing only her formal signature. No recipient place occasion or accompanying photograph is identified and the autograph therefore cannot be connected securely to a particular performance or public appearance. Bailey's cultural importance extended beyond the stage: President Richard Nixon named her an "Ambassador of Love" in 1970 and she subsequently served as a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations during the 1970s. She later received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988. No creasing staining fading or edge damage is identified; card and bold black inscription remain clean and clearly legible near fine. Warmly inscribed autograph connecting Bailey's celebrated performance career with the intimate audience relationships central to her enduring public image. unknown books
