Pearl S. Buck b.1892 - d.1973 was the daughter of American missionaries to China and an author whose 1931 novel 'The Good Earth' won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1938 Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China" and for her books 'The Exile: Portrait of an American Mother' and 'Fighting Angel: Portrait of a Soul' memoirs about her mother and father respectively. Buck's life was defined by her advocacy for the people of China and shifting western perceptions about that part of the world. This collection has several items pertaining to her early recognition on the heels of her Pulitzer Prize when a luncheon was held for her in New York at the Hotel Astor in 1932. There she gave her famous speech "Is There a Case for Foreign Missions" At the end the the audience appeared confused and speechless. Initially no one clapped or congratulated her and Buck later recalled after a few painful moments a storm of applause arose but by then her publisher was abruptly escorting her from the room. Inlcuded here is: 'Luncheon in Honor of Pearl S. Buck at the Hotel Astor November 2nd 1932' listing of guests and their table numbers. Pearl S. Buck is listed as Mrs. J. Lossing Buck her first husband's name at the speaker's table. Press clippings- "WANTS BETTER MISSIONARIES." World-Tel. 1931rif. 141113Melbourne: Stream 1931. First Edition. Paperback. Fair. Melbourne Stream 1931. Small quarto 48 pages. Three-colour pictorial wrappers a little stained and worn but now expertly conserved; minor signs of age and use shallow light tidemarks to most leading edges some contemporary pencilling; overall a decent copy of a rare item. The first issue of this short-lived avant-garde journal it folded after Volume I Number 3 September 1931 together with a copy of the original prospectus small quarto a bifolium with a three-colour illustration on the first page slightly marked and lightly nibbled around the edges. The striking modernist cover design for the prospectus and the first two issues is by Jack Maughan. '"Stream" answered remarkably well a particular need - which will always be present in Australia - the need for good translations of current European writing. It printed translations done by Australians of stories essays and poems contributed to European periodicals by such leading overseas writers artists and musicians as Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes Fernand Leger Arthur Honegger Valentin Katayev Mayakovski Frederic Lefevre Carmelo Puglionisi and "Azorin" José Martinez Ruiz. "Stream" also through its poetry editor Bertram Higgins aroused interest in the spare ironical intellectual poetry of Eliot and of the French symbolists who preceded him . "Stream" was unable to last for more than three issues partly because of the depression and partly because in editor Pearl's words "the self-appointed business manager got away with all the subscription money"' John Tregenza: 'Australian Little Magazines 1923-1954' pages 39-44 including a full-page illustration of the cover artwork of Number 3 'the work of the gifted young Melbourne artist Dominic Leon who was killed not long afterwards in a street accident'. 2 items. Minor edge wear faint dampstain along bottom edge else a really nice example. Very good. An evocative piece of midcentury advertising art featuring Swing Band leader Cab Calloway pitching Pearl Beer of San Antonio Texas. The text of the advertising piece reads: "Join the Swing to Pearl. Xtra Dry. Xtra Light. Xtra Mellow. The 3 X's of Texas - Swing Master Cab Calloway says 'Join the Swing to Pearl' Say.Bottle of Pearl Please." The advertisement is artfully illustrated by a banner of piano keys musical notes a bottle of Pearl Beer and a small outline of the state of Texas with a half-length portrait of Calloway enjoying a tall glass of Pearl at right. Calloway is dressed in an all-white tuxedo and holds a baton in his other hand. The famous band leader’s career as a pitch man included among others Rheingold Extra Dry Beer around 1960 Hula Hoops crackers in the late-1980s and Gap turtleneck sweaters as late as 1993 the year before he passed away.
