1935réf. 280Pearl S. Buck 1892-1973 was an American author best known for her historical fiction set in China. Her novel The Good Earth won the Pulitzer Prize and in 1938 she was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Buck's works set in China come from her first-hand experience living there. Her parents were missionaries in China but returned to the U.S. for Pearl's birth. When Pearl was five months old they all returned to China where Pearl went to school. She left China in 1911 to go to school in the U.S. but returned in 1914 where she married and moved to Suzhou in Anhui Province the setting for her House of Earth trilogy. In the 1920s Buck began publishing stories in various magazines including Nation The Chinese Recorder Asia and Atlantic Monthly. In 1930 she published her first novel with the John Day Company entitled East Wind West Wind. Ultimately she would go on to have a very successful and prolific writing career publishing over seventy novels. A House Divided is the third book in the House of Earth trilogy following the third generation of the family introduced in the first book. This book is in Good condition. There is some fading staining and discolouration to the cloth on the covers. Internally the front hinge is cracked and there are some small tears and minor stains on some of the pages but nothing that appears to affect the text. McClelland & Stewart, Ltd hardcover
